TROY, N.Y. – Junior Brent Beaudoin scored a pair of goals to lead the Brown University men's hockey team to a 3-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Friday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Bears improve to 7-9-3 overall (3-6-3 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 7-16-0 (4-8-0 ECAC Hockey).
After two scoreless periods, Beaudoin got the visitors on the board at 6:56 of the third tipping home a shot from the blue line by freshman Justin Jallen (St. Paul, MN/Northeast Generals). Senior Alex Brink (Hamilton, NY/Boston Jr. Bruins) earned the secondary assist on the play.
Brown made it 2-0 at 9:08, when junior blueliner Zach Giuttari (Warwick, RI/Chilliwack Chiefs) ripped a shot past RPI freshman goaltender
Owen Savory (Cambridge, ON/St. Catharines Falcons) off an offensive zone faceoff. Junior Jack Gessert (Novi, MI/Chicago Steel) won the draw directly to Giuttari, who picked out the top right corner of the net for his fifth goal of the season.
RPI pulled Savory with two minutes to play and generated a number of scoring chances, including a point blank effort from junior
Todd Burgess (Phoenix, AZ/Fairbanks Ice Dogs). Brown junior netminder Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, CA/Fairbanks Ice Dogs) was able to get his glove to the rising shot and tip it over the bar.
Beaudoin capped the scoring with an empty-netter at 19:56. From his own blue line, he found the middle of the RPI cage for his fourth goal of the year. Gessert recorded the lone helper.
The Engineers looked as though they had scored the game's first goal late in the first period, when freshman
Brady Ferner (Dakota Dunes, SD/Sioux City Musketeers) beat Nieto inside the right post, but an official's review waved off the tally due to goaltender interference.
Midway through the second, junior
Jacob Hayhurst (Mississauga, ON/Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) found the underside of the crossbar with a close range chance that would have given RPI the lead.
Both teams finished 0 for 3 on the power play, with the Engineers outshooting Brown, 19-17. Nieto (6-5-1) made 19 saves for his first shutout of the year and second of his career. Savory (2-8-0) had 14 stops.
RPI returns to the ice tomorrow night for the 42nd Annual Big Red Freakout! against No. 20 Yale University (7pm). Brown travels to Schenectady to take on No. 16 Union College (7pm).
