TROY, N.Y. – Junior
Jake Marrello scored the overtime-winning goal to send the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team past Army West Point, on Saturday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 5-14-0, while the Black Knights drop to 8-11-1.
Trailing 1-0 late in the third period, pulled sophomore goaltender
Linden Marshall (Victoria, BC/Trail Smoke Eaters) for an extra skater and capitalized, when senior
Brady Wiffen (St. Mary's, ON/Trenton Golden Hawks) jumped on a loose puck and stuck it home with 20.5 seconds to play. Juniors
Jacob Hayhurst (Mississauga, ON/Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) and
Will Reilly (Toronto, ON/Nanaimo Clippers) picked up the assists on the game-tying goal.
Marrello (Slingerlands, NY/PAL Jr. Islanders) then won it for RPI, just 1:16 into the extra session, skating into the left circle and ripping a shot past Army sophomore goaltender Jared Dempsey (Grosse Point Farms, MI/Wichita Falls Wildcats). The tally, which was Marrello's second of the season, drew assists from junior
Mike Gornall (Irwin, PA/Topeka Pilots) and freshman
Jake Johnson (Bloomington, MN/Cedar Rapids RoughRiders).
Following a scoreless first period, Army got on the board at 15:11 of the second, when junior Bredan Soucie (South Dennis, MA/Islanders Hockey Club) fired a shot over the shoulder of Marshall for his seventh goal of the season. Turning out of the right corner, Soucie found some space in the bottom of the right circle and lifted a shot home, with the long assist going to freshman Colin Bilek (Brighton, MI/Northeast Generals).
The Engineers had a number of chances to pull even early in the third and even had a power play chance with under seven minutes to play, but could not solve Dempsey until the final minute of regulation.
RPI finished 0 for 3 on the man advantage, while the Black Knights were 0 for 2. Marshall (4-8-0) had 27 saves on the night, with Dempsey (3-9-0) stopping 30 at the other end of the ice.
The Engineers are back in action next weekend, when they visit North Country-rivals St. Lawrence and Clarkson on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (7pm), respectively. Army visits Air Force for a pair of Atlantic Hockey contests.
