Men's Hockey Tops UConn for First Victory, 5-3

Zieky shines again at XL Center

Box Score HARTFORD, Conn. - Senior Chase Zieky recorded two goals and an assist to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team to a 5-3 victory over the University of Connecticut on Saturday afternoon at XL Center. With the win, the Engineers improve to 1-1 on the young season, while the Huskies drop to 0-2-1.

UConn netted the only goal of the first period to take a 1-0 lead after one. A loose puck popped out to the left point for Yan Kuznetsov, who ripped a shot home, through traffic, for his first goal of the year. Helpers on the opening salvo went to Carter Turnbull and Justin Howell.

Zieky brought the visitors level just 41 seconds into the second, taking a feed from sophomore Nick Bowman and whipping a shot past UConn goaltender Tomas Vomacka from the left circle. A secondary assist went to freshman Zach Dubinsky.

Freshman Simon Kjellberg gave the Engineers the lead for good (2-1) at 3:58 of the second, joining the rush on the right side and firing home his first collegiate goal from the top of the circle. Bowman and Zieky collected the helpers on the go-ahead tally.

Late in the middle stanza, senior captain Will Reilly stole the puck along the right wall in the offensive zone and stepped into a wrist shot that found its way past Vomacka, short side, for his first goal of the season and 15th of his career. The unassisted marker came at 17:47 of the period.

The Engineers went up 4-1 on freshman Ryan Mahshie's second goal in as many games at 2:26 of the third. Leading a 2-on-1 rush, Mahshie saw his first shot stopped by Vomacka, but was able to flip the rebound into the top left corner of the net.

A power play goal from Zieky - the Engineers' first of the season - gave the visitors a 5-1 lead at 3:24 of the third. Working the puck around the top of the offensive zone, Zieky found a lane and snapped a shot under the crossbar for his second of the game. Helpers went to Kjellberg and Reilly.

UConn mounted a comeback in the later stages of the third as Vladislov Firstov and Jachym Kondelik were able to sneak pucks past RPI junior netminder Linden Marshall, but the Engineers were able to right the ship and hold for the win.

Marshall (1-0) made 31 saves, including 11 in each of the final two periods. Vomacka (0-2-1) finished with 22 stops. Each team had one power play chance in the game with the Engineers posting a perfect day on special teams.

Both teams are back in action on Friday, when the Huskies visit the Houston Field House (7pm) on Family Weekend.
