Women's Soccer Beats Skidmore, 1-0

Meagan Lettko's second half goal stands as the winner in critical league match

TROY, N.Y. – Senior center back Meagan Lettko scored the only goal of the game to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Skidmore College, on Saturday afternoon at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 5-4-2 overall (2-2-0 Liberty League), while the Thoroughbreds drop to 6-3-2 (1-3-0 Liberty League).

Following a scoreless first half in which RPI outshot Skidmore, 7-2, the Engineers continued their attacking play in the second.

Senior Jacqui Richard (Southwick, MA/Westminster School) found herself 1-on-1 with Skidmore goalkeeper Ava Keller (Minneapolis, MN/Southwest) in the 48th minute, but her shot was right at Keller, who was able to hold on. Sophomore Whitney Wisnom (Hillsborough, CA/Design Tech.) played Richard in up the middle of the field.

Five minutes later, Wisnom beat a Skidmore defender to a ball at the edge of the penalty area and dribbled towards goal, before firing a shot near post that was also kept out by Keller.

RPI finally broke through in the 58th minute, when Lettko (Averill Park, NY/Averill Park) leaped to get her head to a corner kick from classmate Alexis Castrellon (Conroe, TX/Battlefield). Keller got a piece of her initial shot, but Lettko made sure by smashing home the rebound inside the six.

Wisnom nearly added an insurance goal in the 84th minute, but her rocket from the left side of the box found the crossbar.

Engineers senior goalkeeper Joey Lyons (3-4-2) made one save for her fourth shutout of the year, while Keller (5-3-2) had five stops at the other end of the field. RPI finished with a 16-3 shot advantage, including 6-1 on goal.

RPI is back in action next weekend, when it travels to No. 4 William Smith and RIT on Friday (4pm) and Saturday (2pm). Skidmore visits RIT and Ithaca next weekend.
