POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Sophomore
Whitney Wisnom scored the final minute of double-overtime to lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Vassar College, at Gordon Field on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Engineers improve to 7-6-2 overall (4-4-0 Liberty League), while the Brewers drop to 8-7-1 (5-3-0 Liberty League).
With under a minute to play in double-OT, Wisnom stole the ball from a Brewers defender on the left and broke in on goal, 1-1-on-1 with Vassar goalkeeper Fiona Walsh. Wisnom tucked home her team-leading sixth goal of the season under the slide of Walsh for the game-winning tally, which came with only 50 seconds on the clock.
Rensselaer can now finish as high as fourth in the Liberty League with a victory over Ithaca on Saturday (3:30pm) and a Vassar loss to RIT.
Senior
Jacqui Richard had an early chance for the Engineers off a corner kick in the 3rd minute, but her header found the arms of Walsh from close range.
The Engineers then found the right post two times in a span of four minute. First, it was junior
Olenka Soko ripping a shot from the top of the box, that drilled the middle of the upright, in the 12th minute. Then, senior
Emily Kaplan made a driving run with the ball across the top of the 18, only to see her attempt find the base of the post and bounce away.
Sophomore
Erin Barnes got free on a partial break early in the second half, but her shot was right into the waiting arms of Walsh from 25 yards out.
Vassar had its best chance to score in regulation come off a corner kick in the 87th minute. Gabi Tuck got on the end of the service from Emma Tanner, but RPI senior goalkeeper
Joey Lyons reached up the keep it out, before falling on the rebound.
The Brewers then had two glorious chances to the end the game late in the first overtime, but back-to-back shots from Samantha Cutler and Emma Trassatti found the crossbar. Lyons got a piece of the initial try by Cutler to steer it off course.
Neither team had much going in terms of chances in the second stanza of extra time before Wisnom broke loose for the game-winning tally – her second deciding goal on the year.
Vassar finished with a 22-8 advantage in shots, although just a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. Lyons (5-6-2) recorded nine saves for her fifth clean sheet of the season and 22nd of her career. Walsh (8-7-1) finished with three saves at the other end.
The Engineers return to action on Saturday, when they host Ithaca College (3:30pm) in their regular season finale. Vassar hosts RIT on Saturday (2pm).
