Women's Hockey Upended in Series Opener

Merrimack breaks open tight game late for 3-0 win

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - Lea-Kristine Demers stopped all 16 shots she faced to lead the Merrimack College women's hockey team to a 3-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Friday afternoon at Lawler Rink. With the win, the Warriors improve to 1-2, while the Engineers drop to 0-3.

Demers (1-2) made eight saves in the first period, three in the second and five in the third for the shutout, while RPI freshman goaltender Amanda Rampado (0-2) had 20 stops, including eight in the third.

After a scoreless first period, the hosts opened the scoring at 10:43 of the second. Sam Lessick tipped home a feed from Courtney Maud just outside the crease for a power play tally. Kiki Roust picked up the secondary assist on the eventual game-winning goal.

Mikyla Grant-Mentis doubled the lead at 13:56 of the period, starting and completing a give-and-go with Katie Kaufman for her first goal of the season. Chloe Cook earned the second helper.

Merrimack capped the scoring with a goal by Gabby Jones at 9:09 of the third. Assists went to Grant-Mentis and DiCaire.

The two teams are back in action for Game 2 of the weekend series tomorrow at 4pm.
