TROY, N.Y. – Thirteen players recorded at least one point for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team in a 6-3 exhibition victory over Brock University, on Saturday afternoon at the Houston Field House. The Engineers, who saw 25 players hit the ice in the contest, open up regular season play next Friday at No. 4 Massachusetts (7pm).
RPI converted its first three power play chances – all in the first period – to open up a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes of play.
Senior
Patrick Polino (Buffalo, NY/Lincoln Stars) got the Engineers started with a man advantage tally at 6:29 of the first, scoring just seven seconds into the power play. Sophomore
Kyle Hallbauer (Howell, NJ/Lone Star Brahmas) then doubled the hosts' lead at 11:06, rifling a shot from home from the top of the right circle.
After Skyler Pacheco (Kitimat, BC) pulled Brock to within 2-1, Rensselaer senior
Chase Zieky (Avon, CT/Salmon Arm Silverbacks) snapped a shot past Badgers goaltender Jacob Hutchings (Bramton, ON) to push the lead back to two at 3-1. Zieky's power play tally came at 16:58 of the opening stanza.
Brock rookie Adam Berg (Calgary, AB) took advantage of a giveaway in front of the RPI net to make it a 3-2 game, just 28 seconds into the second period.
Hallbauer answered, however, scoring eight minutes later to push the RPI lead to 4-2. Taking a feed from classmate
Ture Linden (Great Falls, VA/Lone Star Brahmas), Hallbauer deked his way past a Brock defender and fired a shot past Hutchings for his second goal of the game. Fellow sophomore
Daniel DiGrande (Macomb, MI/Green Bay Gamblers) collected the secondary assist.
Freshman
Cory Babichuk (Edmonton, AB/Spruce Grove Saints) netted RPI's fifth goal at 12:07 of the third. Once again on the power play, Babichuk maneuvered into the left circle and wristed a shot home, through a screen by sophomore
Nick Bowman (Shelby, MI/Coulee Region Chill).
Tyler Rollo (Burlington, ON) cut the Brock deficit to 5-3 at 17:18 of the third, with assists going to Christian Girhiny (Thorold, ON) and Matthew Price-Barnes (Barrie, ON).
RPI senior
Todd Burgess (Phoenix, AZ/Fairbanks Ice Dogs) capped the scoring in the game, when he buried a one-time feed from sophomore
Tommy Lee (Calgary, AB/Chilliwack Chiefs) at the left post.
Junior
Linden Marshall (Victoria, BC/Trail Smoke Eaters) picked up the win between the pipes, stopping 11 of the 13 shots he faced in the first half of the contest. Sophomore
Owen Savory (Cambridge, ON/St. Catharines Falcons) turned away 14 of 15 in the second half.
Hutchings made 12 saves and was saddled the with the loss. Mario Cavaliere (Mississauga, ON) stopped 17 of 19 in relief for the Badgers. The Engineers finished 4 for 5 on the power play, while Brock went 1 for 5.
