TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore
Owen Savory made 29 saves to help the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team to a 2-2 tie at Princeton University, on Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink. With the draw, the Engineers move to 4-4-1 overall (2-2-1 ECAC Hockey), while the Tigers are now 1-2-2 (0-2-1 ECAC Hockey).
Freshman defenseman
Simon Kjellberg got the scoring started all by himself at 7:04 of the first period, blocking a shot at the defensive blue line and skating the puck all the way to right circle on the offensive end, before ripping a shot past Princeton goaltender Ryan Ferland for his third goal of the season.
RPI doubled its lead with just 40 seconds left in the first, when freshman
Ryan Mahshie stole the puck behind the Tigers net and worked the puck to senior
Todd Burgess, who found sophomore
Ture Linden in front for the one-time finish. The tally was Linden's second of the year.
A scoreless second period saw Savory stop all 11 shots he faced, while Ferland had seven saves at the other end. The best chance of the frame came with 8:30 left in it, as Burgess slipped into the Princeton zone on a breakaway, but couldn't stick a shot past Ferland.
The Tigers comeback began at 9:32 of the third on Derek Topatigh's third goal of the year. On the power play, Christian O'Neill found Topatigh open at the right point, where he let a shot fly that found the back of the RPI net. A secondary assist went to Spencer Kersten.
Princeton pulled even at 2-2 with just under eight minutes to play. Jake Paganelli took advantage of a giveaway right in front of the RPI net and he was able to stick home his second of the season from point blank range.
Senior
Patrick Polino and
Jake Marrello nearly comebined to give the Engineers the lead back with five minutes to play, but Ferland stood strong in the crease to deny a pair of point blank chances.
Matthew Thom broke into the Engineers end in the waning seconds of regulation, but his shot was kept out right the horn sounded.
Burgess had an early opportunity in overtime kept out, before the Engineers went on a power play for the final minute and of change of the extra session. RPI pressed late in the overtime period, but could not find the winner, despite a scramble in the front of the Princeton net as time expired.
Savory (3-3-1) made 13 saves over the final period and overtime to help secure the road point, while Ferland finished with 23 stops. The Tigers went 1 for 6 on the man advantage, while RPI was 0 for 3.
