TROY, N.Y. – Junior Brooke Bonsteel recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Quinnipiac University women's hockey team to a 4-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Friday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 5-5-2 overall (1-4-1 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 0-11-1 (0-5-0 ECAC Hockey).
Quinnipiac opened the scoring at 3:54 of the first period, when junior Renee Saltness (Rochester, MN/Rochester John Marshall) found freshman Kenzie Hauswirth (Farmington, MN/Shattuck St. Mary's) with a feed from behind the net to the left circle. Hauswirth slipped a shot past RPI freshman goaltender Ena Nystrom (Stavanger, Norway/Ontario Hockey Academy) for her third goal of the season.
Junior Brooke Bonsteel (Mississauga, ON/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) doubled the lead at 11:43 of the frame, picking up a loose puck in the bottom of the left circle and sneaking it through Nystrom for her second of the year. The lone helper went to freshman Sadie Peart (Grand Rapids, MN/Grand Rapids).
The Bobcats nearly had a third goal in the period, but RPI senior blueliner
Kendra Farole (Irvine, CA/Anaheim Lady Ducks) was able to save the puck from crossing the goal line after it had gotten behind Nystrom.
Late in the second period, Quinnipiac did add a third goal, as senior Sarah-Ev Coutu-Godbout (Rouyn-Noranda, PQ/Canada U-18 National Team) potted her fourth goal of the season on a rebound put back in front. Helpers went to sophomore Lexie Adzija (St. Thomas, ON/Canada U-18 National Team) and freshman Sadie Peart (Grand Rapids, MN/Grand Rapids).
The Engineers generated a couple odd-man rushes in the third period, but were unable solve Quinnipiac senior netminder Abbie Ives (Bedford Hills, NY/NJ Colonials), who turned away all 14 shots she faced for her second shutout of the year.
Junior Laura Lundblad (Ada, MI/East Coast Wizards) capped the scoring with just 14 seconds remaining, finishing off a passing play across the middle of the zone. Bonsteel sent the puck off the left wall to freshman Alexa Hoskin (Belleville, ON/Team Ontario) in the circle, who continued it on to Lundblad in the slot for a one-timer that beat Nystrom, glove side.
Quinnipiac outshot the Engineers, 48-14, with Nystrom saving 44. The Bobcats went 0 for 4 on the power play, while RPI was 0 for 1.
Rensselaer is back on the ice tomorrow afternoon, when they host No. 8 Princeton University (3pm). Quinnipiac travels to Schenectady tomorrow to take on Union (3pm).
