Women's Basketball Wins Third Straight Game

NORTON, Mass. - Celia Tomlinson had 11 points and 15 rebounds and two teammates scored also reached double digits in points as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team defeated Wheaton College 50-45 in a non-league game at Emerson Gymnasium. The Engineers won for the third straight game to improve to 3-1, while the Lyons drop to 3-4.

Wheaton jumped out to a 14-8 lead after the first quarter - its largest lead of the contest - but RPI used an 18-7 edge in the second quarter for a 26-21 lead at halftime. Courtney Lewis scored eight points, including a pair of three-pointers, to open the frame and give the Engineers a 16-14 lead. The Lyons countered with the next five points to go ahead 19-16, but Sam Krumbhaar made a basket and Nicole DaPra and Tomlinson both made a pair of free throws for a 24-21 lead. The two teams traded baskets before the end of the half for a 5-point Rensselaer lead.

The Engineers increased its lead by three points after the third quarter and held off Wheaton in the fourth. Krumbhaar and Tomlinson both hit a pair of free throws with under 20 seconds remaining for a 50-43 lead before Wheaton got a basket with two seconds remaining.

Tomlinson added two blocks and a steal, while Krumbhaar pulled down nine rebounds to go with 14 points and three steals. Lewis scored 11 points with three rebounds.

Wheaton was paced by Mikayla Pucci, who finished with a team-high 11 points. Sadie Shore led all the Lyons with 10 rebounds while netting eight points.

Wheaton is back in action on December 3 when it plays at Pine Manor (6pm). RPI travels to The Sage Colleges for a non-league game on Tuesday night at 5pm.
