Women's Soccer Falls in Quarterfinal, 2-0

Saints score twice in second half to advance in Liberty League Tournament

CANTON, N.Y. – The St. Lawrence University women's soccer team netted two second half goals to top Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 2-0, in a Liberty League quarterfinal, on Tuesday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field. With the win, the Saints improve to 12-4 overall and advance to Saturday's semifinal match against top-seeded and second-ranked William Smith (11am). The Engineers conclude their season at 8-7-2.

After a scoreless first half in which hosts held a 5-3 edge in shot attempts (3-1 on goal), the Saints broke through with the game's first goal in the 62nd minute. Sophomore Isabel Silvia (Wellesey, MA/The River School) got on the end of a cross from the right by junior Julia Mulhern (Beaconsfield, PQ/Hotchkiss) for her seventh goal of the season.

Junior Katie Clemmer (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) doubled the Saints' lead in the 78th minute, ripping a shot from 25 yards out into the top right corner of the net. Classmate Hannah Arment (Wilemette, IL/New Trier) earned the assist on Clemmer's third tally of the year.

The Engineers turned in the best chance of the first half, when a corner kick from left side by senior Jacqui Richard (Southwick, MA/Westminster) found sophomore Meghan Huang (Mountain View, CA/Los Altos) at the far post. Her shot was touched wide by Saints goalkeeper Samanthan Allen (Ringwood, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy).

In the second half, RPI worked a corner kick play that sprung sophomore Whitney Wisnom (Hillsborough, CA/Design Tech) free along the end line, but her rocket of a shot was punched out by SLU junior goalkeeper Cynnie White (Northport, MI/Westminster Academy) in the 55th minute.

After falling behind by a pair, the Engineers sent numbers forward a handful of occasions, but were unable the bulge the SLU net. Richard had Rensselaer's last chance in the 80th minute, but her shot from distance was saved.

St. Lawrence finished with a 12-9 edge in shot attempts, including 9-5 on target. The Engineers won the corner kick battle, 6-4. Allen (11-2) picked up the win between the sticks, while White had four saves. RPI senior Joey Lyons (Harwood, MD/Southern) turned away seven shots at the other end of the field.
