Women's Basketball Suffers Loss in First Game

WENHAM, Mass. - Meghan Foley scored 23 points and Sarah Gibbs scored 12 with 20 rebounds to lead the Gordon College women's basketball team to a 73-68 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday at Bennett Center. The game was the first of the season for both teams.

The Fighting Scots jumped out to an 8-1 lead behind five points from Olivia Gagnon and eventually made it nine points (13-4) on a layup from Foley with 4:22 left in the first quarter. RPI pulled to within six points with 2:13 to play (16-10) and again with 27 seconds left (18-12) on baskets from Courtney Lewis and Sam Krumbhaar.

A Foley three-pointer to begin the second quarter made it 21-12, but RPI scored the next four baskets, including two three-pointers from Lewis, to take a 22-21 lead with 4:38 to play. After Gordon tied the game at 22-22, Lewis scored on a free throw and another trey for a 26-22 advantage. The half ended in a 28-28 deadlock.

The game remained close through the first five minutes of the third quarter and then the Scots went on a 15-5 run to close the frame, led by four baskets from Foley.

Rensselaer battled back to within two points, 62-60, on a layup from Lewis with 2:35 to play, but Serianna Anderson and Olivia Gagnon answered with layups at 2:18 and 1:56 to make it a two-possession game. An Anderson free throw with 31 seconds left made it a 67-60 edge and Gordon sealed the victory by making free throws.

Lewis finished with 17 points, while Celia Tomlinson had 12 points and eight rebounds. Ortea also had 12 points and Brielle Sharry scored 10 points with five rebounds.
