UTICA, N.Y. - Twelve student-athletes scored at least two points and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) enjoyed a 27-point run on its way to scoring a season-high for points in defeating Anna Maria College 109-71 on the second day of the Utica College Classic. The win was the eighth in a row for the Engineers, who are now 8-2 after shooting over 60% for the contest. The Amcats were held under 40% in dropping to 3-9.
Anna Maria opened the game with a three pointer, but two baskets by
Mason Memmelaar, one by
Dom Black and another by Memmelaar put Rensselaer ahead 8-3. Memmelaar, a sophomore, went on to finish with a game-high 22 points on 10 of 13 shooting.
After an Amcats basket, the Engineers scored 10 straight points for an 18-5 lead with 13 minutes remaining in the first half. Anna Maria cut its deficit to four points (23-19) four minutes later and the score remained close for the remainder of the half with RPI leading 43-35 at the break.
Leading by 12 points (61-49) five minutes into the second half, Rensselaer went on a 27-0 run for an 88-49 lead with 8:26 to play. The margin remained around 40 points as RPI made 24 of 40 (60%) of its shots in the final 20 minutes.
Memmelaar was joined in double digits by junior
Patrick Mahoney, who had 17 points (7 of 11), along with a game-high 11 rebounds. Freshman
Will Rubin also had 17 points (5 of 7) and sophomore
Dom Black scored 14 (5 of 9). He also had eight rebounds, two assists and three steals.
Overall RPI made 42 of 69 shots for a percentage of 60.9, including 6 of 19 (31.6%) from three point range. It was helped by a 50-19 advantage on the boards with 11 Engineers pulling down at least two rebounds.
Anna Maria, which made 39.7% of its shots (25 of 63) was led by Ralph Grasso's 12 points.
