TROY, N.Y. - Sophomore
Mason Memmelaar scored 23 points on 11 of 15 shooting and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team made 53.4% of its shots in defeating St. Lawrence University 91-54 in a Liberty League game at East Campus Arena. The Engineers won for the fourth straight time to improve to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the league, while the Saints dropped to 1-4 and 0-1.
Memmelaar, a forward, was one of three RPI players in double figures and one of 13 who scored at least one point. He was 10 of 14 from two-point range and 1 of 1 from behind the arc while adding seven rebounds and a steal in 26 minutes. Freshman
Will Rubin had 15 points on 6 of 9 shooting with 3 of 4 from three-point range, including a buzzer beater from past half court as time expired going into halftime. He also had a game-high seven assists and a steal off the bench. Senior
Mitchel Wayand made 4 of 8 shots, all from behind the arc, and finished with 12 points for the Engineers, who were 11 of 27 (40.7%) from long distance. Senior
Kevin Davis has a game-high eight rebounds, along with eight points.
St. Lawrence also had three players in double digits, led by sophomore Cale Sargent's 16 points. Chris Jeffrey and Luke Hicks both had 10 points for the Saints, who connected on 38.5% (20 of 52) of their shots, including 22.7% (5 of 22) from three-point range. Jeffrey led them in rebounds with six, while freshman Andrew Geschickter had team-bests in assists and steals with three apiece. He scored four points.
The game was tied at 7-7 just 2:39 into the contest but Rensselaer scored 14 straight points over the next seven minutes to build 21-7 lead. Six different players scored in that span, led by four points from freshman
Jonny Angbazo.
St. Lawrence answered with seven straight points on a three-pointer from Hicks, a basket by Geschickter and a layup from Sargent, but Angbazo scored again and Davis hit a jumper for a 25-14 lead with nine minutes to play in the first half.
RPI's advantage got to 15 points (31-16) with 7:10 to play and reached 17 points (43-26) when Rubin's heave went through at the horn. Rensselaer went on to outscore St. Lawrence by 20 points in the second half, thanks in part to 56.8% (21 of 37) shooting, for the final margin.
The Engineers, who forced 21 turnovers, host Clarkson University on Saturday at 4pm, while SLU travels to Union College for a game at the same time. Both contests are Liberty League matchups.
