TROY, N.Y. – Senior
Mike Gornall scored the tying goal in the final seconds of regulation before assisting on the overtime-winner to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Brown University, on Saturday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 6-9-1 overall (3-5-1 ECAC Hockey), while the Bears drop to 3-9-0 (3-7-0 ECAC Hockey).
Trailing by a goal with under 15 seconds left, the Engineers worked an offensive zone faceoff back to the blue line for senior captain
Will Reilly (Toronto, ON/Nanaimo Clippers). He slid a pass to the right circle for freshman
Cory Babichuk (Edmonton, AB/Spruce Grove Saints), who missed his initial shot attempt, before tracking the puck down in the corner and sending a backhand pass across the goal mouth. Gornall (Irwin, PA/Topeka Roadrunners) was waiting on the other side and stuffed home the tying goal with two seconds on the clock.
Freshman
Tristan Ashbrook (Mantistique, MI/Lincoln Stars) then won the game just 36 seconds into overtime, taking a feed from Gornall and slotting a shot just inside the left post for his second goal of the season. Babichuk collected the secondary assist on the game-winning tally – his second helper of the night.
A tightly checked first period saw few chances arise in either direction. RPI senior
Chase Zieky (Avon, CT/Salmon Arm Silverbacks) saw his point blank effort kept out by Bears senior Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, CA/Fairbanks Ice Dogs) midway through the frame.
Brown got on the board late in the first, when freshman Luke Krys (Ridgefield, CT/Salisbury School) collected a rebound in the right circle and rifled it into the top right corner of the net. Assists went to sophomore Justin Jallen (St. Paul, MN/Northeast Generals), who took the initial shot from the left side and senior Brent Beadoin (Londonderry, NH/Islanders HC).
The Engineers picked up their play in the second period, but were unable to solve Nieto, despite outshooting the visitors, 13-8, in the stanza.
RPI pulled junior goaltender
Alec Calvaruso (Linovia, MI/Sioux Falls Stampede) with just over a minute left, setting up the wild finish.
Calvaruso (1-0-0), who was making his first RPI start between the pipes, finished with 25 saves, while Nieto (2-6-0) had 27 stops at the other end of the ice. The Engineers finished 0 for 1 on the power play and Brown was 0 for 2.
Rensselaer is now idle until December 29, when it hosts No. 11 UMass (4pm). The Bears host the Minutemen on Tuesday night (7pm).
