Ines Ortea also had a double-double as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team defeated Union College 59-48 in a Liberty League contest. The Engineers improve to 10-9 overall and 5-7 in the conference, while the Dutchwomen fall to 12-6 and 7-5.
Martin, a senior forward, made 9 of 13 shots from the field and had six offensive rebounds among her 14 to lead all players in each category. She also two assists and a steal in 33 minutes. Ortea, a junior, also played 33 minutes and registered 13 points - seven from the free throw line - and 12 boards (6 offensive), along with three assists and three steals. Tomlinson's 10 caroms (3 offensive), eight points and two assists came in 27 minutes of action for RPI, which out-rebounded the Dutchwomen by 11 (47-36).
Union used a 12-2 run in the first quarter to break out on top after the first 10 minutes, 20-13. RPI came back in the second, outscoring its hosts 12-4 for a one point lead at halftime. In that second quarter, a 6-0 stretch for the Engineers - with Martin scoring four points - pulled them to within a point (22-21) and a pair of free throws from Ortea with 17 seconds left put them ahead for the first time.
The Dutchwomen scored the first six points of the third quarter for a 30-25 edge. RPI cut into its deficit, but Union again went ahead by five points, 34-29, with 4:30 to play in the frame. The Engineers answered by scoring 10 of the final 12 points in the third quarter with Martin tallying eight straight points in the stretch.
Rensselaer maintained at least a five point lead throughout the fourth quarter for the win. Ortea, Martin and Tomlinson accounted for all of the Engineers' points in the last 10 minutes.
Union was led by Amber Raisner's 18 points and a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds from Sophie Borg.
