HAMILTON, N.Y. – Junior Bobby McMann scored 2:01 into overtime to lift the Colgate University men's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Saturday night at Class of 1965 Arena. With the win, the Raiders improve to 10-19-3 overall (7-10-3 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 10-19-3 (7-11-2 ECAC Hockey).
McMann (Wainwright, AB/Bonnyville Pontiacs) broke a 1-1 deadlock in the extra session, breaking into the offensive zone on the right side, before slotting the puck between the legs of RPI freshman netminder
Owen Savory (Cambridge, ON/St. Catharines Falcons) for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Colgate opened the scoring at 6:43 of the second, when sophomore Evan Tschumi (Calgary, AB/Whitecourt Wolverines) snuck home a close range shot for his first goal of the season. Helpers on the goal went to classmate Paul McAvoy (Richmond, KY/Surrey Eagles) and junior Jacob Panetta (Belleville, ON/Wellington Dukes).
RPI outshot the Raiders, 10-4, in the second period, but could not solve freshman goaltender Mitch Benson (Windsor, ON/Brooks Bandits) through 40 minutes of play.
Junior
Chase Zieky (Avon, CT/Salmon Arm Silverbacks) did finally break through at 16:15 of the third period, sticking a rebound past Benson for his seventh goal of the year. Freshman Ottoville Leppanen (Espoo, Finland/Espoo Blues U20) had his attempted kicked to the left side, where Zieky was waiting for the tap-in finish. Senior captain
Tommy Grant (Sparta, NJ/Bay State Breakers) collected the secondary assist on the tying goal.
Benson (9-17-3) finished with 31 saves, including all 10 shots he saw in the second period. Savory (5-11-3) had 25 stops, with 12 coming in the first period. Both teams went 0 for 2 on the power play.
The Engineers return to action next weekend, when they host Harvard University and Dartmouth College at the Houston Field House. Puck drop is scheduled for 7pm on both nights, including Senior Night on Saturday against the Big Green. Colgate closes out its regular season schedule at Clarkson University and St. Lawrence University, next weekend.
