Women's Basketball Suffers Defeat to Vassar

TROY, N.Y. - Junior Sophie Nick scored a game-high 15 points, including the 1000th of her career, to lead the Vassar College women's basketball team to a 56-38 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in a Liberty League contest at East Campus Arena. The first place Brewers improve to 14-2 and 20-3 overall, while the Engineers drop to 11-11 and 6-9.

Vassar jumped out to a 15-9 lead after the first quarter behind balanced scoring as six different players had points. The Engineers got their points from Courtney Lewis (5) Celia Tomlinson (4).

The Brewers extended their lead by nine points in the second quarter, holding RPI to 0 for 13 from the field while forcing six turnovers.

Nick had six points and five rebounds in the first half and Jackie Cenan scored four points with four rebounds for the visitors.

RPI came out of the locker room after halftime and immediately cut into its deficit by scoring the first six points of the third quarter to pull to within 24-15. Isa Peczuh answered with a three pointer for the Brewers to give them a double digit advantage, which the Engineers eventually cut to eight points (33-25) on a Tomlinson free throw with 1:01 left in the frame.

After being outscored by six points in the third (18-12), Vassar shot 72.7% (8 of 11) in the fourth quarter while holding the Engineers to 29.4% (5 of 17) to pull away.

Nick, who collected her 1000th point on a layup while being fouled, finished 4 of 9 from the floor and 7 of 7 from the free throw line. She also had eight rebounds. Cenan registered a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Lewis paced the Engineers with 14 points, while Tomlinson scored 12 points with a team-high eight rebounds.

RPI is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Union College in a conference contest (7pm). The Brewers are home to William Smith College on Friday at 5pm.
