Baseball Tosses Combined One-Hitter in 7-0 Win

Engineers top Cobleskill in home opener

TROY, N.Y. - Sophomore righthander Ryan Yerby earned his first collegiate victory in leading the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a combined one-hit shutout of SUNY Cobleskill, on Wednesday afternoon at Robison Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 3-3 on the year, while the Fighting Tigers drop to 1-4.

Rensselaer plated two runs in the first and fourth innings, respectively, thanks to run-scoring singles from sophomore Joseph Curci (Chicago, IL/University of Chicago High School) and junior Jack Vaccari (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton).

Yerby (Montara, CA/Half Moon Bay) saw his no-hit bid spoiled with one out in the top of the sixth. After a flyout and a walk, classmate Michael Castello (Pearl River, NY/Nanuet) came into the two-on, two-out situation and was able to preserve RPI's 2-0 lead by picking up a strike out to end the frame.

The Engineers immediately tacked on three runs in the bottom of the sixth without the benefit of a run batted in. Back-to-back walks to lead off the frame were followed by sacrifice bunt by sophomore Jake Defayette (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont). After a strikeout, Vaccari hit a ground ball to short, but a throwing error allowed him to reach and two runs to score. Later in the inning, a wild pitch brough home RPI's fifth run.

Senior outfielder Michael Arboleda (Wappingers Falls, NY/John Jay) pushes the RPI lead to 6-0 with an infield single in the bottom of the eighth, before Curci plated the game's final run with a fielder's choice grounder to third.

Yerby allowed just one hit  over 5.2 innings in his second start of the year. He struck out four and walked four, finishing with 87 pitches. Classmate Chris Grome (Framingham, MA/Dexter Southfield School) worked a perfect seventh and eighth with three strikeouts, before fellow sophomore Thomas Neuman (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Westminster Academy) got through the ninth, surrendering only a walk.

Sophomore Devin Lewis (Cobleskill, NY/Cobleskill-Richmondville) was saddled with the loss, allowing two unearned runs over 4.0 innings. He struck out one and walked one. The Fighting Tigers pitchers allowed only two earned runs on the day, as the Cobleskill made four errors in the field.

RPI is back in action tomorrow afternoon, when it hosts Middlebury College at Robison Field (4pm). The Tigers visit the College of New Rochelle on Saturday for a doubleheader (12pm).
