TROY, N.Y. -
JT Kelly had four goals and two assists and
Owen Putman and
Cooper Urban both scored four times with one assist to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team to a 14-7 victory over Plattsburgh State University in a non-league game at East Campus Stadium. RPI, which is ranked No. 17 in Division III, is now 5-0, while the Cardinals drop to 1-2.
Plattsburgh jumped in front just 52 seconds into the game on a goal by James Sherwood, but the Engineers got tallies from Putman off a loose ball at 12:30, Kelly on a bouncing shot at 10:54, Putman following an Urban steal at 12:49 of the second and Urban on a low shot 2:19 later for a 4-1 lead.
The Cardinals' Kevin Murphy answered 59 seconds after Urban's goal and Jack Mullen scored man-up less than a minute after that to pull the visitors to within 4-3. Putman and Urban countered but Plattsburgh took the momentum into the locker room at halftime after Mullen scored as time expired. Teammate Joe Falco made a save, which led to a ground ball pickup by Kyle Smith, who sent a pass to Max Burgio at midfield. Burgio connected with Mullen, who was just outside the goal crease and released the shot just before the half ended for his second of the game and fourth of the season.
RPI went back ahead by three goals 38 seconds into the third quarter, but Mullen notched his third of the contest - and his second man-up - to make it 7-5 with 5:35 to play in the frame. Urban scored before the quarter ended and the Engineers went on to add three more to start the fourth for an 11-5 lead with 8:30 to play. Kelly had two of the goals and
Lucas Bastarache, who set up Kelly's second in that span, scored the other.
Mullen found Stephen Kane at 6:53, but Urban's 14th of the year gave Rensselaer a 12-6 lead. Jake Carroll notched one for Plattsburgh before Kelly and Putman closed out the scoring with their 13th and 15th of the season, respectively.
In addition to his game-high six points, Kelly also had two ground balls and five shots. Putman took 11 shots and picked up five ground balls, which tied for the team lead with
Tyler Hancock, who was 11 of 21 on faceoffs. Senior
Keaton Ackermann had three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Sophomore
Brian Doughty stopped six shots in the first 30 minutes for the win.
Falco had 11 saves in the contest, in which Rensselaer held a 39-28 advantage in shots and a 33-29 edge in ground balls. Mullen finished with four points with five shots and a ground ball. Carroll had a goal and an assist with two pickups.
Plattsburgh State returns to action on Saturday when it faces Scranton in a neutral site game (1pm). RPI is also on neutral turf on Saturday when it faces Ohio Wesleyan in Scranton, Pa., at noon.
