ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball team won a pair of two-run games to earn a weekend series split with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Sunday afternoon at Honey Field. With wins of 5-3 and 4-2, the Raptors improve to 9-10 overall (3-5 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 9-8 (5-3 Liberty League).
Bard received strong starting pitching from Evan Matthews (1-1) and Frank Ortega (2-2), who each picked up wins on the hill. RPI sophomore
Ryan Yerby went the distance in Game 1, allowing five runs (4 earned), with four stikeouts and three walks.
The Engineers opened the scoring in the top of the first, when
Joseph Curci grounded into a double play, with
Jake Defayette trotting home from third on the play. Bard drew even in the bottom of the second on an RBI-triple from Esteban Rivera.
After a scoreless third, the Raptors broke the game open with a four-run bottom of the fourth, highlighted by an run-scoring double from Jordan Myers, which gave the hosts a 5-1 advantage. RPI did get two runs back in the top of the fifth on a wild pitch and an RBI-groundout by Defayette to pull within 5-3, but could not get any closer.
In Game 2, RPI scored first again, getting one in the opening frame, but the Raptors recorded two runs of their own to take a 2-1 lead. An infield single by Rory Maglich and an RPI error plated the two runs in the inning.
The Engineers tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the third on a single by Vaccari that scored freshman
Cole Paquin, who singled to right with two away and moved to second on a base hit from Curci.
Bard broke the tie in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run triple off the bat of Rivera, scoring Chris Blake and Robert Arciola.
Ortega allowed two runs on 12 hits over 7.0 innings, striking out five and walking three as the Engineers left 15 runners on base. RPI starter
Chris Grome took the no-decision, giving up two runs (1 earned) on three hits in 3.0 innings.
The Engineers return to the diamond on Wednesday, when they host Middlebury College (4pm). Bard hosts Merchant Marine Academy on Wednesday (4pm).
