Allie Hunt and freshman
Ryleigh Greenwald each turned in three-hit games to help the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team to a pair of victories over Penn State Brandywine and Carthage by scores of 8-1 and 2-1, respectively. With the wins, the Engineers are 7-2 on the season.
In the first game of the day against Brandywine, Hunt led a 14-hit attack by the Engineers, going 3 for 3 with a run and two runs batted in. Classmate
Veronica DeStefano was 2 or 4 with two runs out of the leadoff spot, while Greenwald was 2 for 2 with a pair runs.
RPI got off to a hot start, scoring a run in the first on an RBI-single by Hunt. Classmate
Cam Caswell singled home the Engineers' second run in the bottom of the third. Fellow junior
Maddie Provencher plated two more runs in the frame with a base hit to center, scoring Caswell and
Steph Cavallaro for a 4-0 lead.
After Penn State got on the board in the top of the fourth, the Engineers got the run right back in the bottom half, as Hunt lifted a sacrifice fly to center.
Cavallaro added some insurance in the bottom of the sixth, launching a three-run homer to center.
Freshman
Erika Holowka (4-1) allowed one run on five hits over 6.0 innings to earn the win. She struck out five and walked two.
Nicole Small worked a scoreless seventh in relief.
In game two on the day, neither team was able to dent the scoreboard until the sixth inning, when Greenwald doubled home two runs with a drive to center.Â
Carthage cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the sixth, before the Engineers plated two in the top of the seventh for a 4-1 advantage. Caswell singled to right, bringing home freshman
Jessica Torch. A double-steal by Caswell and Cavallaro brought home the final run of the contest.
Taylor Spargo earned the win in the circle, giving up one run on five hits over 5.1 innings. Holowka claimed her first collegiate save, surrendering two hits in 1.2 innings. She struck out three.
RPI is back on the diamond tomorrow for the final two games of its Spring Break trip. The Engineers duel Monmouth College (9am) and Moravian College (1:30pm).Â
