Men's Hockey's Season Ends at Yale

Bulldogs complete series sweep with 4-0 victory in Game 2

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman defenseman Jack St. Ivany had a hand in the first three goals to lead the Yale University men's hockey team to a series-clinching 4-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Saturday night at Ingalls Rink. With the Game 2 win, the Bulldogs improve to 15-13-3 and advance to the quarterfinals, while the Engineers conclude their season at 10-23-3.

St. Ivany (Manhattan Beach, CA/Sioux Fall Stampede) opened the scoring at 4:03 of the first period, when he received a pass from behind the net by senior Joe Snively (Herndon, VA/Sioux City Musketeers) and ripped one-timer past RPI freshman goaltender Owen Savory (Cambridge, ON/St. Catharines Falcons) for his fourth goal of the year.

Snively made it 2-0 at 6:06 of the second, finding space in the middle of the slot on the power play for his 15th goal of the season. Sophomore Tyler Welsh (Whistler, BC/Victoria Grizzlies) delivered the centering feed from the left wing boards to Snively, who finished first time. The secondary assist went to St. Ivany.

The hosts netted their second man advantage tally at 17:55 of the middle period, when Welsh stepped into a slap shot from just inside the right circle and beat Savory for his second tally of the year. Snively made the final pass from the right corner, while St. Ivany had the secondary helper for his third point of the game.

Yale added an empty-net goal with 22 seconds remaining in regulation, as senior Anthony Walsh (Burr Ridge, IL/Green Bay Gamblers) stuck home his fourth of the season from just across the red line. The lone helper was credited to junior Evan Smith (Stouffville, ON/Dubuque Fighting Saints).

Senior goaltender Sam Tucker (Wilton, CT/Choate Rosemary Hall) had 25 saves for the shutout, while Savory finished with 26 at the other end of the ice.

RPI saw seven players register multiple shots, including freshman Kyle Hallbauer (Howell, NJ/Lone Star Brahmas), who had a team-high five. Classmate Jake Johnson (Bloomington, MN/Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) and junior Jacob Hayhurst (Mississauga, ON/Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) had three apiece.
