Baseball Upended by Golden Eagles

Brockport scores in all but the eighth inning to beat Engineers, 12-3

TROY, N.Y. – The College at Brockport baseball team scored in all but one inning in defeating Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 12-3, on Wednesday afternoon at Robison Field. With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 10-15 overall, while the Engineers drop to 11-12.

Five players recorded multiple hits for Brockport, including three apiece from first baseman Anthony Eaton (Troy, NY/Troy) and shortstop Charlie Serino (Hopewell Junction, NY/Arlington). Third baseman Louis Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) was 1 for 4 with four runs batted in.

RPI was paced offensively by sophomores Richard Drum (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), who went 2 for 4 with a walk and a run and Joseph Curci (Chicago, IL/University of Chicago High School), who as 2 for 3 with a run batted in.

Starting pitcher Tom Kretzler helped himself with an RBI-groundout in the top of the first, before sacrifice fly from Miceli made it 2-0 after one.

The Golden Eagles then proceeded to tally single runs in each of the next five frames, including a run-scoring double from Eaton in the third. RPI pulled to within 5-1 in the fourth, when Curci singled home freshman Cole Paquin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa).

A four-run top of the seventh opened up an 11-1 lead for the visitors, highlighted by a bases clearing double by Miceli.

RPI got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning, with Paquin drawing a bases loaded walk ahead of a pinch hit RBI single from freshman Parker Gelfuso (Moorpark, CA/Sierra Canyon) – the first hit of his collegiate career.
