TROY, N.Y. – The College at Brockport baseball team scored in all but one inning in defeating Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 12-3, on Wednesday afternoon at Robison Field. With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 10-15 overall, while the Engineers drop to 11-12.
Five players recorded multiple hits for Brockport, including three apiece from first baseman Anthony Eaton (Troy, NY/Troy) and shortstop Charlie Serino (Hopewell Junction, NY/Arlington). Third baseman Louis Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) was 1 for 4 with four runs batted in.
RPI was paced offensively by sophomores
Richard Drum (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), who went 2 for 4 with a walk and a run and
Joseph Curci (Chicago, IL/University of Chicago High School), who as 2 for 3 with a run batted in.
Starting pitcher Tom Kretzler helped himself with an RBI-groundout in the top of the first, before sacrifice fly from Miceli made it 2-0 after one.
The Golden Eagles then proceeded to tally single runs in each of the next five frames, including a run-scoring double from Eaton in the third. RPI pulled to within 5-1 in the fourth, when Curci singled home freshman
Cole Paquin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa).
A four-run top of the seventh opened up an 11-1 lead for the visitors, highlighted by a bases clearing double by Miceli.
RPI got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning, with Paquin drawing a bases loaded walk ahead of a pinch hit RBI single from freshman
Parker Gelfuso (Moorpark, CA/Sierra Canyon) – the first hit of his collegiate career.
Brockport capped the scoring with an RBI-double off the bat of junior Brad Nowak (New Salisbury, IN/North Harrison).
Kretzler (1-0) allowed one run on five hits over 5.0 innings to pick up the win, striking out four and walking one. Junior
Erick Zecha (Keene, NH/Keene) was saddled with the loss (0-5) giving up four runs (2 earned) on six hits in 3.0 innings. H had one strikeout and no walks.
The Engineers are back on the diamond next Wednesday, when they host Eastern Connecticut State (4pm). Brockport visits Fredonia for a three-game set this weekend, beginning on Friday (3pm).
