No. 12 Williams Takes Two From Softball

Ephs escape in opener, 4-3, before run ruling Engineers in nightcap, 13-0

TROY, N.Y. - Mara Kipnis went a combined 5 for 5 to lead the 12th-ranked Williams College softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Wednesday afternoon at Doris Robison Field. With wins of 4-3 and 13-0, the Ephs improve to 21-4 overall, while the Engineers drop to 18-6.

Kipnis went 3 for 3 with a a double, two runs and an RBI in Game 1, as Williams jumped out to an early lead, scoring once in the first and three more times in the third. An RBI-single from Rebecca Duncan got the Ephs started in the first, before Kipnis singled home Jessica Kim for the first run of the third. Mackenzie Murphy then launched a two-run homer to push the visitors' advantage to 4-0.

RPI mounted a comeback in the seventh, as junior Veronica DeStefano ripped a three-run homer, with classmates Quin Garant and Maddie Provencher aboard, to draw within 4-3. A single, sandwiching a pair of walks, then loaded the bases, but Duncan was able to end the game with a strikeout, stranding the tying run on third.

Duncan (9-2) allowed three runs on four hits over 7.0 innings, striking out five and walking five. Engineers freshman Erika Holowka (10-2) gave up four runs on nine hits in 7.0 innings, picking up two strikeouts and one walk.

In Game 2, Williams scored in the first five frames to win the run-rule shortended affair, 13-0. Kirstin Mapes capped a four-run first inning with two-run homer, before a sacrifice fly from Duncan pushed the lead to 5-0 after two.

Solo homers from Riley Salvo and Jessica Kim in the third and fourth innings made it 7-0, before a pair of groundouts produced two more runs in the fourth made it 9-0. Casey Peltz then doubled in the Ephs' 10th run before the inning was over. Williams added three runs in the fifth to cap the scoring.

Murphy (8-2) earned the victory in the circle, allowing one hit in 5.0 innings, striking out three. Sophomore Taylor Spargo (5-1) suffered her first loss of the year, surrendering seven runs (6 earned) on seven hits in 3.0 innings. Freshman Nicole Small worked the final 2.0 innings for the Engineers.

RPI is back on the diamond on Saturday, when it hosts Clarkson University in a Liberty League doubleheader (1pm). Williams hosts Bates College on Sunday (12pm).
