Engineers defeat league foe Vassar in Poughkeepsie

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Lucas Bastarache scored five goals and Brian Doughty made 14 saves to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team to a 12-9 victory at Vassar College. The No. 16 Engineers improve to 10-2 overall and 4-1 in the Liberty League, while the Brewers are now 3-8 and 1-4.

Trailing 6-5 early in the third quarter, Rensselaer took its biggest lead by scoring six of the next seven markers for an 11-7 edge with 6:05 to play in the fourth quarter. Bastarache tied the game at 6-6 under a minute after the Brewers took the lead and Cooper Urban put the visitors in front with a man-up goal 56 seconds later.

Bastarache tallied again, this time off a feed from JT Kelly with 2:31 left in the third for an 8-6 lead, but Vassar got one back with a Kyle Cherry goal to start the fourth quarter. Kelly, a senior, scored back-to-back goals, including one while man-down, and Bastarache scored his fifth of the game for a four-goal lead.

The Brewers scored the next two goals to get within two with 4:21 to play, but RPI's Owen Putman scored unassisted with 2:57 left for the final margin.

The Engineers got five points apiece from Bastarache and Kelly (3 goals, 2 assists)  and a goal and assist from both Putman and Urban. Doughty had three saves in the first quarter, five in the second, four in the third and two in the fourth quarter.

Stefan Fleps made 10 saves for Vassar, which got four goals and one assist from Mike Mullen. Cherry had two goals and Connor Deehan picked up three assists. Matthew Lowery won 16 of 26 faceoffs and had 12 ground balls.
