TROY, N.Y. - The Liberty League has announced its weekly award winners in men's lacrosse and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Brian Doughty has been named the Defensive Performer of the Week.

A sophomore goalie, Doughty (Glenelg, MD / Glenelg) stopped 16 shots while allowing only nine goals in a 12-9 victory at conference foe Vassar College in RPI's lone contest last week. He had five saves in both the first and second quarters, four in the third and two in the fourth to help the Engineers improve to 10-2 overall and 4-1 in the league. Six of the goals he allowed were assisted and one came while the Brewers were man-up. Doughty also had team-bests of four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

In 12 games this season, all starts, he is 8-2 with a 9.70 goals against average and a .565 save percentage. Doughty, who has made 95 saves while allowing 73 goals, is sixth in the conference in save percentage, ninth in saves per game (7.92) and 10th in goals against average. He also has 17 ground balls and five caused turnovers.

An industrial and management engineering major, Doughty played six games as a freshman, including one as a starter. He went 2-0 with an 11.16 goals against average and a .509 save percentage. His victories came against Plattsburgh State and Clarkson University. He was the Liberty League Rookie of the Week once as RPI went 12-4 overall and 6-2 in the Liberty League.

Doughty played four years of lacrosse in high school, starting on the varsity and serving as captain as a senior. He was All-County First Team after helping the team to the 2017 Regional Championship and the Maryland State Finals. He also played football, serving as a two-year starter on the offensive and defensive lines. He captained the team, which won a regional title, as a senior. Doughty was a Principal's Honor Roll student who was inducted into the National Honor Society.

Rensselaer, which saw Lucas Bastarache (Wayland, MA / Wayland) earn Weekly Honor Roll recognition, is ranked No. 16 in the latest USILA Division III Coaches Poll. RPI hosts No. 15 Union College (10-1; 5-0) on Wednesday at 6pm at East Campus Stadium.
