TROY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team swept a doubleheader against St. Lawrence University on Saturday afternoon at Doris Robison Field by scores of 3-2 and 13-1 in 5 innings. With the victories, which included the Engineers' sixth in a row, they are now 26-8 overall (8-4 Liberty League), while the Saints concluded their season at 18-16 (2-12 Liberty League).
A tightly contested Game 1 saw the two teams trade single runs in the second and third innings, before RPI took a 3-2 lead in to the top of the fifth. Freshman
Erin Askins hit into a double play with runners on first and third, plating classmate
Jessica Torch from third.
Following a scoreless sixth, the Saints threatened in the bottom of the seventh by loading the bases with nobody out. Engineers junior righthanderÂ
Jaime Cleasby was able to get out of the jam, however, recording a strikeout and an infield pop up, before inducing an inning-ending groundout.
Junior
Maddie Provencher and sophomore
Kyla Anderson each recorded a pair of hits for RPI, while Cleasby (7-3) allowed two runs on seven hits over 7.0 innings. She struck out seven and walked one. The Saints saw Taylor Armijo and McKailey Lyndaker reach twice via the base hit, while Caroline Young (10-7) surrendered three runs (2 earned) on seven hits in 7.0 innings.
Rensselaer broke out the bats in Game 2, collecting 16 hits, including seven for extra bases in a run-rule shortened victory. Junior catcher
Quin Garant opened the scoring with a three-run home run in the top of the second, before RBI-hits from classmate
Allie Hunt, Askins, Provencher and
Cam Caswell followed, for a 7-0 advantage.
The Engineers plated four more in the third, highlighted by a two-run triple off the bat of Askins. Junior
Veronica DeStefano capped the scoring for RPI with a two-run single to center.
St. Lawrence got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, when Sofia Adams homered over the fence in left.
RPI received three-hit games from DeStefano, Hunt and Caswell, while Garant was 2 for 4 with a home run and four runs batted in. Freshman
Erika Holowka (13-3) gave up just two hits over 4.0 innings, with two strikeouts. Gabby Slater (5-7) allowed seven runs (3 earned) over 2.2 innings.
The Engineers are back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they travel to Ithaca College for the final two regular season games of the year (3pm).Â
