TROY, N.Y. - Following a come-from-behind victory in the first round, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team travels to Union College for a Liberty League Tournament Semifinals game on Wednesday evening at 5pm at Frank Bailey Field. The Engineers, who are 12-4 overall and ranked No. 19 in the latest USILA Coaches Poll, are the No. 3 seed, while the No. 12 Dutchmen, who are 12-2, are the No. 2 seed. The winner advances to Saturday's championship game.
Wednesday's game is a rematch from April 17 when Union defeated Rensselaer 17-12 behind a five-goal fourth quarter in Troy. The score was tied 12-12 heading to the final frame, during which the visitors got goals from four different players, including two from Hayden Frey. Alex Newhouse won 15 of 19 faceoffs and Patrick Regan was 10 of 14, while Jack Santilli made 11 saves for the Dutchmen.
Brian Doughty and
Kyle Botsford combined for 14 saves for Rensselaer, which got multiple points from six different players.
Rensselaer, which got a goal with 0:01 remaining to defeat Clarkson University 13-12 on Saturday, is 44-32 in its history against Union, including a 21-17 record on the road. The two teams last played on Bailey Field in 2018 with the Engineers winning 8-4. It was their second straight road win in the series following a four-game losing streak in Schenectady.
RPI has played the Dutchmen three times in the post-season with all three resulting in losses at Union. The teams met in the ECAC Tournament in 1995 (10-9), the Liberty League Championship Game in 2011 (8-7) and the conference semifinals in 2014 (8-3).
Heading into this season's playoff game, the Engineers average 14.5 goals while allowing 10.5. Four players have at least 50 points, led by senior attack
JT Kelly's 74 (37 goals, 37 assists). Doughty, a sophomore, is 10-4 with a 10.35 goals against average and a .538 save percentage.
The Dutchmen average 13.64 goals while holding the opposition to 7.64. They have three players with at least 30 points, led by Frey (28 goals, 9 assists) and Kerry Lyne (30 goals, 7 assists), who have 37 apiece. Santilli, a senior, is 12-2 with a 7.39 goals against and a .604 save percentage.
The winner of Wednesday's contest advances to Saturday's final against either No. 1 Rochester Institute of Technology (16-1), the top seed, or No. 18 St. Lawrence University (13-3), the No. 5 seed. The highest remaining seed hosts the game.
