ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Freshman
Erin Askins went a combined 4 for 7 with three runs batted in to help the 19th-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Stadium. With wins of 4-2 and 11-0, the Engineers improve to 18-2 overall (2-0 Liberty League) and have now won 16 straight games. The Tigers drop to 7-11 (0-2 Liberty League).
RIT was on the cusp of ending the Engineers' month-long streak in Game 1, taking a 2-0 lead into the top of the sixth inning. A sacrifice fly from junior
Cam Caswell brought the visitors to within 2-1, however, setting the stage for the top of the seventh.
After a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth, the Engineers completed the comeback in the top of the seventh, scoring three times on four hits. With one down, junior
Veronica DeStefano doubled to left, followed by a single to center by freshman
Jessica Torch, which plated DeStefano to tie the game. Torch advanced on the throw and then came home when Askins ripped single to left, giving the Engineers the lead. Junior
Steph Cavallaro capped the rally with a run-scoring double to right, bringing home Askins.
Freshman righthander
Erika Holowka (10-1) worked a shutdown bottom of half of the inning, including her sixth strikeout, to earn the win in the circle. She allowed two runs (1 earned) on five hits and did not walk a batter.
In Game 2, Askins got the scoring started early with a first inning single that scored DeStefano. After a scoreless second, RPI rallied for four runs in the top of the third, highlighted by a bases clearing double off the bat of Caswell.
RPI put the game away in the fourth, plating six more runs. RBI base hits from DeStefano and classmate
Allie Hunt, were followed by a groundout from Caswell that brought Hunt in from third. Fellow junior
Maddie Provencher then blasted a three-run double to center to score the Engineers' ninth, 10th and 11th runs of the game.
Junior
Jaime Cleasby (3-1) pitched all 5.0 innings, allowing two hits and a walk. She struck out three Tigers.
The Engineers are back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they visit the University of Rochester for a twin bill (1pm). RIT hosts Skidmore College tomorrow (1pm).
