No. 19 Men's Lacrosse Drops Semifinals Game

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Kerry Lyne scored five goals, including four in the first half when the Union College men's lacrosse team built a 9-0 lead, and the No. 12 Dutchmen defeated No. 19 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) 13-8 in a Liberty League Tournament Semifinals game at Frank Bailey Field. Union, the No. 2 seed, improves to 13-2 and advances to play No. 1 RIT on Saturday at 1pm. RPI, the No. 3 seed, falls to 12-5.

After falling behind by nine at halftime, the Engineers scored the first five goals of the second half. Senior Lucas Bastarache got them on the board at 11:34 and freshman Cooper Urban followed just 16 seconds later. Will Killeen then drove to the net from the left sideline and scored his ninth of the season with 10:08 remaining in the third quarter.

Ryan Cole set up Jason Bram at 7:50 and Connor Glosner scored from close range to pull Rensselaer to within four goals, 9-5, with 3:57 to go in the third. Lyne ended RPI's run with an unassisted goal, his first solo tally of the contest, with 28 seconds left. That goal started a string of three straight for Union, which held a 42-38 edge in shots and a 40-30 advantage in ground balls.

The Engineers scored three of the final four goals, including a pair from JP McGrady and another from Killeen, but it was not enough. Killeen finished with two goals and an assist and McGrady had two goals. Six others had single points. Brian Doughty made six saves in the first half and Kyle Botsford stopped seven in the second.

Jack Santilli made 15 saves for Union, which saw Alex Newhouse win 15 of 19 faceoffs and pick up nine ground balls. Urban led RPI with four ground balls.
