ITHACA, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) saw its Liberty League Tournament bid fall short on Friday, dropping games to Ithaca College (8-0) and the University of Rochester (6-3). The Engineers are now 28-11 overall, while the Bombers and Yellowjackets will square off in the Championship Round, which begins on Saturday at noon.
Ithaca scored one run in the first and two in the second to open up an early 3-0 lead. Vanessa Brown and Nikkey Skuraton each delivered RBI-doubles in the second stanza.
RPI nearly tied the game in the top of the third, but junior
Allie Hunt's drive to left landed just foul.
After two empty frames, the Bombers plated three more runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run triple to center by Daniella Mulvey, to make it 6-0. Abbey Shields brought the game to an end with a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth.
Beth Fleming (12-2) went 4.0 innings to earn the victory in the circle. She allowed three hits and struck out two.
Jaime Cleasby (9-4) was saddled with the loss for RPI, surrendering five runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings.
In the elimination game against Rochester, the Yellowjackets used a pair of homers in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Harleigh Kaczegowicz lifted a three-run shot to center, before Gianna Melilllo made it back-to-back long balls with a solo drive down the left field line.
Alizah Ayon doubled home Rochester's fifth run in the fourth, before a sacrifice fly from Kaczegowicz gave the Yellowjackets a 6-0 lead, later in the frame.
RPI rallied for three runs in the in the top of the sixth, beginning with an RBI-groundout from freshman
Erin Askins. Junior
Steph Cavallaro then ripped her fifth home run of he season - a two-run shot to right center - to bring the Engineers within 6-3.
A Rochester error and a single by junior
Veronica DeStefano put two aboard with just one out in the top of the seventh, but back-to-back flyouts ended the threat and the ballgame.
Hannah Leahy (8-6) allowed three hits in 4.0 innings for the win, while RPI sophomore
Taylor Spargo (6-3) gave up four runs on five hits in 2.1 innings.Â
