TROY, N.Y. – Senior Daniel Zeglen had five hits and picked up a win on the hill to lead the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Saturday afternoon at Robison Field. With wins of 5-1 and 11-2, the Tigers improve to 21-14 overall (15-5 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 17-17 (13-9 Liberty League).
Zeglen went 6.0 innings to pick up the win in Game 2, allowing two runs on six hits. He struck out two and walked three. At the plate, he was 2 for 4 with two runs and a run batted in.
RIT scored one run in the first and one in the second. RPI got its first run in the bottom of the first on a two-out, RBI-single off the bat of sophomore
Joseph Curci. The Engineers then drew even at 2-2 in the bottom of the third on a run-scoring base hit from
Richard Drum.
The Tigers then struck for four in the top of the fourth, highlighted by an RBI-double by Kyle Terzini. A Navada Waterman sacrifice fly pushed the visitors' lead to 6-2.
A five-run sixth completed the scoring in the contest, as RIT collected five hits and took advantage of one RPI error. Patrick Blackall had an RBI-single, before Zeglen ripped a base hit to left that brought home Waterman. After the error made it 10-2, Luke McNamara capped a 3 for 4 day with a run-scoring single through the right side of the infield.
In Game 2, RIT starter Stevie Branche (5-2) held the Engineers hitless through 5.2 innings. Drum broke up the no-hit bid with a line drive single to right center that also brought home RPI's first run of the game.
The Tigers got two runs in the first and two in the third to open up a 4-0 lead. Daniel Capra hit a solo home run in the first, while Zeglen and Patrick Mylott each doubled home single runs in the third.
Waterman added an insurance run in the top of the sixth, singling home Kyle Watson for a 5-0 lead.
Sophomore
Ryan Yerby (5-2) went 6.0 innings in defeat, allowing five runs on eight hits. He struck out seven and walked two. Branche (5-2) allowed a run on one hit in 6.0 innings, striking out three and walking five.
Both teams are back in action for a twin bill tomorrow afternoon at Robison Field (12pm).
