CARLISLE, Pa. – The Dickinson men's soccer team improved to 2-0 on the season, posting a 3-0 shutout over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Saturday afternoon at Miller Memorial Field. The Red Devils claim the Brothers' Pizza Blue Jay/Red Devil Classic title and improve to 2-0 on the year, while the Engineers drop to 1-1.
Senior Kevin Gilbert continued his strong start, netting the first two goals of the match before delivering a through-ball to classmate Mohammed Kane (New Haven, Conn./Wilbur Cross) for the final tally of the night.
Gilbert collected the ball inside the penalty area and beat the defense to put the Red Devils on the board in the 25th minute. He found the net again in at the midpoint of the second half, finishing an assist from first-year Adam Moreland to give Dickinson a 2-0 advantage.
Just moments later the Red Devils countered off a defensive corner and it was off to the races for Gilbert and Kane as they finished a well-executed 2-on-1 break-away.
The Red Devils had a solid defensive performance as well in front of senior goaltender Frederick Meagher, who turned away eight shots on the night to secure the shutout. Dickinson held a 16-11 shot advantage while the teams each forced three corners on the night.
Matt LaBranche finished with six saves, the best of the night coming off a well struck shot by Mohamed Kourouma.
The Red Devils (2-0) are on the road next weekend, traveling to Lebanon Valley College on Saturday (1pm). RPI hosts Castleton on Saturday (4pm).
