CORTLAND, N.Y. - Ro Hernandez scored a pair of goals early in the second half to lift the SUNY Cortland women's soccer team past Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at Holloway Field. With the win, the Red Dragons improve to 2-3, while the Engineers drop to 1-2-2.
Hernandez tallied in the 49th and 51st minutes after a scoreless opening 45 minutes. Sabrina Rodrigues set up the opening strike by sending Hernandez in 1-on-1 with RPI senior goalkeeper
Joey Lyons. Then, Bryn Thompson for Hernandez for a shot that found the top left corner from 25 yards out.
The Engineers had a pair of chances later in the half, but were unable to find the target. First, senior
Grace Heine took a free kick from the edge in the 18 in the 70th minute that whistled just over the bar. Then, in the 88th minute, sophomore
Whitney Wisnom beat three Cortland defenders before sending her attempt high.
Lyons (1-2-2) finished with five saves before giving way to junior
Kate Nadeau, who had two stops over the final 20 minutes. Danika Svendson had two saves on the day for the Red Dragons.
RPI is back in action on Tuesday, when it hosts Sage College at ECAV Stadium (7pm). Cortland travels to St. John Fisher on Tuesday (7pm).
