Men's Soccer Pushes Win Streak to Six Games

Josh Gaudiano records five points in 3-1 victory at SUNY Geneseo

GENESEO, N.Y. – Freshman Josh Gaudiano had a hand in all three goals to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory at SUNY Geneseo, Saturday afternoon at College Stadium. With the win – their sixth straight – the Engineers improve to 7-1, while the Knights drop to 4-3.

A physical opening 45 minutes was capped off by Gaudiano's first of two goals on the day, in the 39th minute. Sophomore Paul Silva slipped a ball into the right side of the box for Gaudiano, who rolled a shot under the slide of Geneseo goalkeeper Will Price.

The hosts drew even in the 50th minute, when Eren Aydin netted his first goal of the year. A lob from the midfield line by Caleb Murthy found Aydin in stride and he ripped a low shot past RPI senior goalkeeper Matt LaBranche from 16 yards out.

After a shot by Silva was tipped over the crossbar, Rensselaer junior captain Joe Di Miceli capitalized on the ensuing corner kick, as he headed home the go-ahead goal from the top of the six. Gaudiano delivered the right-footed service from the right side and Di Miceli hammered into the top of the net for his first goal of the season and third of his career.

Gaudiano polished off the scoring with his second goal of game and sixth in RPI's last six matches. Following a Geneseo corner kick, senior Dillon Ashong launched a 40-yard ball to Gaudiano who was 1-on-1 with a defender. Racing towards goal, Gaudiano lost his right cleat, but was able to finish anyway, giving the visitors a 3-1 lead with under 10 minutes to play.

LaBranche (2-1) had five saves in the game, including three in the second half. Price (4-3) also had five stops on the day. RPI six-game winning streak is its longest since 2015, when the team opened the season with eight straight victories and went unbeaten through 10 games (8-0-2). Gaudiano's six goals are the most by a freshman since junior Trevor Bisson netted six in 2017.

The Engineers return to action on Saturday, when they visit North Country-rival St. Lawrence (3pm). The Knights travel to Oswego on Friday (4pm).
