TROY, N.Y. – Freshman Kaitlyn O'Donohoe recorded a career-high three points to lead the Colgate University women's hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Friday afternoon at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Raiders improve to 10-9-4 overall (4-4-1 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 0-21-1 (0-11-0 ECAC Hockey).
The visitors opened the scoring at 11:26 of the first period, when freshman Sammy Smigliani (La Jolla, CA/Belle Tire) stuck home her seventh of the season from classmate Danielle Serdachny (Edmonton, AB/Pursuit of Excellence) and junior Malia Schneider (Millarville, AB/Canadian Dev. Team).
RPI pulled even just 2:09 in the second on freshman
Maddy Peterson's (Princeton, MN/Princeton High School) first collegiate tally. Leading a 3-on-1 rush into the offensive zone, Peterson rifled a shot into the lower left corner of the net to knot the score at 1-1. The lone helper on the tally went to junior
Lauren Severson (Rockford, IL/Madison Capitals).
O'Donohoe (Downington, PA/Mid-Fairfield Stars) then put the Raiders up for good at 8:51 of the middle frame, taking a feed from the left by sophomore Eleri MacKay (Brookfield, WI/Chicago Mission) and ripping a shot off the crossbar and into the net from the middle of the slot.
Less than three minutes later, O'Donohoe gave Colgate a 3-1 lead, batting in the rebound of a shot by sophomore Delani MacKay (Brookfield, WI/Chicago Mission) from the right side of the crease. The goal was her second of the team and third of the season.
Smigliani capped the scoring at 5:18 of the third, sliding a shot past RPI freshman goaltender Ena Nystrom (Stavanger, Norway/Ontario Hockey Academy) for her eighth of the season.
Colgate sophomore netminder Alexa Dobchuk (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) made 14 saves to pick up the win, while Nystrom had 33 stops at the other end of the ice.
RPI is back in action tomorrow afternoon, when it hosts No. 4 Cornell (3pm), while the Raiders visit Union College (3pm).
