TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore goaltender
Owen Savory made 37 saves in recording his second straight shutout to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team to a 3-0 victory over Colgate University, on Saturday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 9-11-1 overall (6-6-1 ECAC Hockey), while the Raiders drop to 8-10-4 (6-3-1 ECAC Hockey).
Savory (Cambridge, ON/St. Catharines Falcons) earned his third career shutout, making seven saves in the first period, 18 in the second and 12 in the third. He finished with three stops during Colgate's three power play chances. At the other end of the ice, sophomore Andrew Farrier (Montreal, PQ/Kingston Voyageurs) had 24 stops, with nine coming in the opening frame.
RPI netted a pair of goals just over a minute apart in the first to take a 2-0 lead. Senior
Patrick Polino (Buffalo, NY/Lincoln Stars) fired home the eventual game-winning tally at 16:12, after receiving a pass up the left wing boards from sophomore blueliner
Jake Johnson (Bloomington, MN/Cedar Rapids Roughriders). Freshman
Mason Klee (Morrison, CO/Sioux Falls Stampede) collected the secondary assist on the play – the first point of his collegiate career.
Senior
Chase Zieky (Avon, CT/Salmon Arm Silverbacks) then made it 2-0 at 17:36, when he picked out the top right corner of the net for his sixth goal of the season. Freshmen
Zach Dubinsky (Highland Park, IL/Lincoln Stars) and
Simon Kjellberg (Nashville, TN/Dubuque Fighting Saints) collected the helpers on the goal.
The Engineers added a late second period insurance goal, as sophomore
Daniel DiGrande (Macomb, MI/Green Bay Gamblers) went coast-to-coast for his second goal in five games. Racing up the left wing, he flipped the puck past one defender, before driving the net and scoring off another Raiders' stick in front of the net.
Colgate had chances throughout the contest, but could not solve Savory, who stopped a pair of breakaways in the contest. RPI finished 0 for 6 on the power play, while the Raiders went 0 for 3.
The Engineers are back in action next weekend, when they travel to Brown University and Yale University on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (7pm), respectively. Colgate hosts Harvard University and Dartmouth University next weekend.
