NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Curtis Hall netted a pair of goals, including the game-winner to lead the Yale University men's hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Saturday night at Ingalls Rink. With the win, the Bulldogs, improve to 8-9-0 overall (6-6-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 10-12-1 (7-7-1 ECAC Hockey).
Justin Pearson opened the scoring at 15:52 of the first period, firing through a screen from the top of the right circle for his fifth goal of the season. The power play tally drew assists from Brandon Tabakin and Tyler Welsh.
An unassisted goal from Hall at 5:32 of the second made it 2-0 Bulldogs, as he went coast-to-coast, before firing home his 11th goal of the year, off the pipe and in.
The hosts pushed their advantage to 3-0 at 17:03 second after forcing a turnover in the offensive zone. Will D'Orsi broke up the RPI breakout from behind the net, deflecting the puck to Luke Stevens, who threw a centering pass to Kevin O'Neill at the right circle. O'Neill's shot was stopped by Engineers junior goaltender
Alec Calvaruso, but the rebound fell to Stevens for the easy finish.
RPI nearly got the board in the final minute of the second period, when sophomore
Ture Linden found himself open at the right side of the crease, but Yale netminder Corbin Kaczperski made a sprawling save to keep the Bulldogs' lead at 3-0.
Hall made it a 4-0 game at 8:47 of the third, rifling a shot past Calvaruso from the left circle after receiving a cross-ice feed from Tyler Welsh. Jack St. Ivany collected the second assist on Hall's second of the game and 12th of the campaign, which came on the man advantage.
The Engineers were able to get on the board at 18:37 of the final period, as freshman
Cory Babichuk ripped home his second of the season on a rebound chance in the middle of the slot. Senior
Mike Gornall was denied by Kaszperski on a breakaway moments earlier. The Puck popped free to a trailing Babichuk for the one-time smash. Sophomore Ottoville Leppanen notched his eighth assist of the season on the tally.
Kaczsperski (7-7-0) finished with 27 saves, including 11 in the first period, while Calvaruso (1-2-0) had 25 stops at the other end of the ice. The Bulldogs converted on 2 of 3 power play opportunities, with the Engineers going 1 for 5.
RPI is back on the ice next Saturday, when it hosts Union College in the Eighth Annual Mayor's Cup at the Times Union Center in Albany. Puck drop is scheduled for 6pm. Yale travel to Sacred Heart on Saturday (7:30pm).
