MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Freshman
Luke Lyons won two events and two of his teammates were victorious in one apiece to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's track & field team to a win at the nine-school, multi-divisional Middlebury Invitational. RPI compiled 173.50 points, followed by Middlebury (151), St. Lawrence University (108), the University of Vermont (79) and Union College (57).
Individually, Lyons won the 500 meters with a time of 1:07.03, which was more than two seconds ahead of the runner-up's time of 1:09.20. He also ran the lead on the 4x400 relay team that won with a time of 2:26.80, outpacing the second place squad by nearly four seconds (3:30.60). Also representing Rensselaer was
Leighton James,
Ben Ertel and
Neil Casimir.
Also victorious on the track was senior
Temidayo Kamson, who won the 200 in 23.38 to edge Casimir's 23.43. Two other individuals were also second place finishers with
Zaire Wilson in the 60-meter dash (7.22) and
Frank Triolo in the 3000 meter run (9:06.41).
The 4x200 relay team of
Mike McNicholas,
Liam Pek, Kamson and
Dale Kelly also finished as runner-up, compiling a time of 1:35.66. They trailed first place Vermont by only .05.
Rensselaer's most successful field event was the weight throw, which senior
Mark Shapiro won with a throw of 16.97. The runner-up reached 14.79 and RPI's
Ben Zawislak was third at 14.64 meters. Of the 25 total competitors in the event, RPI had six of the top eight finishers.
The Engineers return to action next weekend with competitors going to Harvard University and Utica College.
