Big First Quarter Propels Men's Lacrosse at MIT

Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team outscored Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) 6-0 in the first quarter and went on to defeat the Engineers 14-6 in a non-league game at Roberts Field.

THE BASICS:
- Score: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 14, MIT 6
- Records: MIT (1-1); RPI (3-1)
- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium)

- The Lead: RPI rattled off eight straight goals to open the game en route to a 14-6 victory over MIT. Sophomore Cooper Urban paced Rensselaer with four goals and an assist. Sophomore James Santoro produced one goal and four assists for MIT.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Owen Putman opened the scoring by connecting on a pass from Nicholas Colucci at the 11:55 mark, setting off a string of three quick goals in a span of 1:52. Will Hatcher fueled RPI's next scoring burst as he set up Putman with 4:30 on the clock and then found Urban just over a minute later for a man-up goal. Hatcher capped the first-quarter scoring with a solo effort that gave the visitors a 6-0 lead.
- RPI carried the momentum into the second as Connor Glosner and Putman increased the cushion after 3:35 elapsed. MIT ended the shutout when first-year Tory Lentine redirected a feed from Santoro at the 9:26 mark. Exactly 1:12 later, junior Gavin Vandenberg found the back of the net to make the score 8-2. Jason Bram answered with 5:40 left in the half while Putman buried a man-up strike with 15 seconds left in the frame.
- In a balanced second half, both squads recorded a goal in the third quarter and then netted three in the fourth quarter.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Putman finished with four goals and three ground balls as Glossner recorded two goals and two assists. Hatcher bolstered RPI's attack with one goal and two assists. Robby Gale amassed nine ground balls while Garrett Volley generated two caused turnovers. Nick DeOliveira was 9-of-18 in face offs and had three ground balls.
- Sophomore Andy Shin posted two goals while classmate Ben Dwyer registered four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Senior Jameson Kief chipped in three caused turnovers as first-year Andrew Palleiko was 10-of-16 on face offs and notched five ground balls. Senior Joe Vasile totaled five ground balls while sophomore goalie Lukas Drexler-Brucecollected 13 saves.
- RPI used all four of its goalies in the win. Brian Doughty earned the win after making eight saves and seeing 36 minutes of action. Ricky Bokavich gathered five saves during the next 15 minutes as Garrett Gagnon turned away three shots over the course of four minutes. Nico Nighosian did not come up with a save as he closed out the game for the visitors.

- MIT was 12-of-20 on its clearing attempts, 11-of-23 in face offs, and 2-of-9 with an extra man.
- RPI was 19-of-22 during its clearing attempts, 12-of-23 in face offs, and 2-of-4 with an extra man. The visitors also had advantages in ground balls (37-28), shots (43-38), and shots on goal (27-23).

- MIT will host UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday, March 4 at 4:00 p.m. while RPI returns to action on Saturday, March 7 when it travels to Babson College for a 2:00 p.m. start.
