Engineers battle Broncos in non-league series this weekend

I'VE GOT A GOAL IN KALAMAZOO
RPI visits Western Michigan for a two-game, non-league series this weekend ... Puck drop on both Friday and Saturday night's is scheduled for 7:05pm ... These are the final two non-league games of the regular season for Rensselaer.

FREAKOUT! SWEEP
The Engineers won both games on Big Red Freakout! weekend for the first time since 2013, topping Dartmouth, 7-1, on Friday night, before shutting out Vermont, 1-0, in the 43rd Annual Big Red Freakout! on Saturday. Owen Savory stopped 73 of 74 shots on the weekend, while freshman Zach Dubinsky dished out three assists. 

RPI LEADERS
Rensselaer senior Chase Zieky (7 goals, 11 assists) has a team-high 18 points, while classmates Will Reilly (7 goals, 10 assists) and Mike Gornall (5 goals, 11 assists) are right behind him with 17 and 16 points, respectively ... Fellow senior Patrick Polino (8 goals, 5 assists) has 13 points while leading the team in goals ... Freshmen Cory Babichuk (3 goals, 9 assists) and Zach Dubinsky (2 goals, 10 assists) have 12 points each.

GOALTENDING
Sophomore Owen Savory (8-7-2) has a 2.20 goals against average and a .925 save percentage in 17 starts, while junior Linden Marshall (3-3-0) has a 2.91 goals against average and a .903 save percentage in seven games (6 starts) ... Classmate Alec Calvaruso (1-2-0) has a 2.61 goals against average and a .909 save percentage in four games (3 starts).

DEPTH IN NUMBERS
The Engineers boast 10 players with double-digit point totals already this season, including five seniors, two sophomores and three freshmen.

ALL-TIME VS. WESTERN MICHIGAN
RPI leads the all-time series with the Broncos, 5-2-0, dating back to the inaugural meeting on December 28, 1979 – a 4-2 Western Michigan victory in the Rensselaer Holiday Tournament at the Houston Field House, which the Broncos went on to win ... The Engineers are 2-1 in Kalamazoo, having played most recently in 1998, when RPI took home a 2-1 victory.

RECENTLY
RPI and Western Michigan have played just once since 1999 – a 4-1 Engineers victory at Notre Dame on November 27, 2015.

STREAKS
The Engineers have won five straight games in the series after losing the first two to the Broncos.

IN OVERTIME
RPI and Western have never gone to overtime in seven meetings.

SHUTOUTS
The lone shutout in the series belongs to RPI's Joel Laing on January 23, 1999 – a 2-0 Engineers triumph at the Houston Field House in the Broncos most recent visit.

SCOUTING THE BRONCOS
Western Michigan saw its six-game unbeaten streak (5-0-1) snapped at Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday night, falling 4-2 ... The Broncos have seen an offensive explosion over the last two weeks, averaging 4.5 goals per game over their last eight contests.

INDIVIDUALLY
Senior Hugh McGing (5 goals, 18 assists) paces Western with 23 points, while classmate Dawson DiPietro (8 goals, 10 assists) and junior Paul Washe (9 goals, 9 assists) are tied with 18 points apiece.
BRONCOS GOALTENDING
Freshman Brandon Bussi (12-10-3) has a 2.72 goals against average and a .909 save percentage in 25 starts ... Senior Ben Blacker (0-0-1) has a 3.29 goals against average and an .895 save percentage in six games (1 start).

HOW LOW CAN YOU GO?
The Engineers have a 2.11 team goals against average in 16 ECAC Hockey contests this season, which ranks third in the league and ninth nationally.

CONFERENCE SUCCESS
Individually, all three RPI netminders have had solid seasons in ECAC Hockey play ... Owen Savory is 6-5-1 with a 2.12 goals against average and a .926 save percentage, while Alec Calvaruso (1-1-0) has a 2.03 goals against average and a .921 save percentage ... Not to be outdone, Linden Marshall (1-1-0) boasts a 1.83 goals against average and a .938 save percentage.

VERY GOOD BOYS
At 7.62 penalty minutes per game, the Engineers are the second least penalized team in the nation, trailing only Minnesota (7.58) ... Alaska-Anchorage, the most penalized team, is averaging 16.04 minutes per contest ... Amongst ECAC Hockey foes, Harvard is right behind RPI at 7.80 minutes per game.

GOALIE OF THE MONTH
Sophomore Owen Savory was named MAC Goaltending Goalie of the Month in ECAC Hockey after posting a 4-0-1 record in five starts ... He compiled a 0.59 goals against average and a .980 save percentage, with two shutouts ... He was twice named ECAC Hockey Goalie of the Week during the run.

EXORCISTS
This the season the Engineers have halted a number of winless streaks, including eight straight against Dartmouth, seven in a row with Clarkson, five consecutive Big Red Freakout! games and three Mayor's Cup contests.

TWO BILLS
With Saturday's win over Vermont, head coach Dave Smith eared his 200th career victory ... He won 172 over his 12-year stint at Canisius, before taking over the Engineers in 2017-18.

TURN IT UP... PAST 11
Senior Patrick Polino's seventh goal of the season gave him 12 points on the year, which set a new career high ... He recorded exactly 11 points in each of his three previous seasons.

THREE SHUTOUTS
Sophomore Owen Savory's three shutouts this season are the most by an RPI goaltender since Jason Kasdorf recorded three during his freshman season of 2012-13. 

ALMOST THREE IN A ROW
Savory came just 12.8 seconds from becoming the first RPI hockey goaltender to record three consecutive shutouts, when he surrendered Brown's only goal on January 18. 

EMPTY NET DOUBLE
The Engineers netted empty net goals in back-to-back games on January 3 and 4 for the first time since Freakout! Weekend in 2011 ... RPI beat Brown 3-0 and then-No. 1 Yale, 5-2, on in the Big Red Freakout!

SOPHOMORE FEAT
Owen Savory became just the fourth RPI goaltender to register four shutouts before the end of his second season on the team, joining Nathan Marsters (5), Bill Sack (4) and Jason Kasdorf (4).

SAVORY TIMES TWO
Owen Savory collected his second straight ECAC Hockey/MAC Goaltending Goalie of the Week award on January 13 after stopping all 37 shots he faced in a 3-0 shutout of Colgate on January 11.

BACK-TO-BACK
Savory is the seventh RPI goaltender in program history to notch two straight shutouts, joining Bob Fox (1954 & 1955), Bill Sack (1964), Joel Laing (1999, 2000 twice), Kevin Kirk (2002), Nathan Marsters (2004) and Jason Kasdorf (2013).

SAVORY PICKED BY LEAGUE
ECAC Hockey has announced its weekly award winners and sophomore Owen Savory has been named MAC Goaltending Goalie of the Week for January 6 ...He posted a 25-save shutout of St. Lawrence University in his only start last week ... On Saturday against the Saints, he recorded six saves in the first period, eight in the second and 11 in the third to pick up his fourth win the season. Stopping a handful of breakaway in the first two periods, he helped the Engineers go 3 for 3 killing penalties on the night.

ECAC HOCKEY RANKINGS
The Engineers are sixth in the league scoring, averaging 2.54 goals per game ... RPI's power play is ninth at 15.2%, while its penalty kill is second (86.4%) ... The Engineers are allowing 29.6 shots per game this season, which is good for fifth in the conference ... They gave up 33.6 shots per contest last year ... RPI is fourth in the league in face-off percentage at 51.7% after ending last season in 11th (47.2%) ... The Engineers are allowing just 2.12 goals per game in ECAC Hockey play, which ranks third ... Their 475 shots are the most in the league.

PLUS/MINUS LEADERS
Senior captain Will Reilly is a team-best +13 through 26 games this season, while freshmen Zach Dubinsky and Cory Babichuk are second at +7 ... Seniors Jake Marrello and Chase Zieky are both +4.

FIRST GOALS
Cory Babichuk became the fifth rookie to score his first collegiate goal this season, tallying against Harvard on November 22 ... Tristan Ashbrook netted his first RPI goal on November 9 against Clarkson ... Classmates Ryan Mahshie and Zach Dubinsky each tallied in the season opener, while fellow rookie Simon Kjellberg scored his first NCAA goal against UConn on October 12 ... Sophomore Daniel DiGrande potted his first collegiate tally against No. 9 UMass on December 29, in his 14th career game.

ENGINEERS GET SPLIT
RPI fell to then-second-ranked Cornell, 3-0, on Friday night, before blanking Colgate by the same score the following night ... Sophomore Owen Savory highlighted the weekend by posting his second consecutive shutout against the Raiders, stopping all 37 shots he faced ... Three different players found the back of the night on Saturday, including seniors Patrick Polino and Chase Zieky.

NORTH COUNTRY SWEEP
Rensselaer earned its fifth North Country sweep in program history and the first since 2012-13 last weekend, topping then-No. 4 Clarkson, 3-1, on Friday, before shutting out St. Lawrence, 3-0, on Saturday ... Freshman Tristan Ashbrook (2 goals, 1 assist) and senior captain Will Reilly (1 goal, 2 assists) paced the Engineers offensively on the weekend, while junior Linden Marshall (32 saves at Clarkson) and sophomore Owen Savory (25 saves at St. Lawrence) were rock solid between the pipes.

ELITE COMPANY
Only three RPI teams have posted a sub-2.20 team goals against average in ECAC Hockey play over the last 20 years, including 2003-04 (1.98), 2015-16 (2.16) and 2012-13 (2.19) ... The 2019-20 Engineers are at 2.11 with six conference games to play.
