W. Michigan Pulls Away From Men's Hockey

Broncos use big second period again to push past Engineers, 6-2

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Senior Cam Lee scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Western Michigan University men's hockey team to a 6-2 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Saturday night at Lawson Ice Arena. With the win, the Broncos improve to 14-10-4, while the Engineers drop to 12-14-2.

Lee (Ferguson's Cove, NS/Green Bay Gamblers) broke a 1-1 tie just 48 seconds into the second period, sparking a three-goal scoring run to the open the frame. A breakaway tally from senior Lawton Courtnall (Westlake Village, CA/Sioux Falls Stampede) at 2:26 was followed by a power play tally from Austin Rueschhoff (Wentzeville, MO/Dubuque Fighting Saints) at 3:44 to open up a 4-1 lead.

RPI got back to within 4-2 at 14:22 of the middle frame, when senior Todd Burgess (Phoenix, AZ/Fairbanks Ice Dogs) collected a loose puck at the left side of the slot and lifted a shot inside the right post for his second goal of the weekend and seventh of the season. The man-advantage tally drew helpers from classmate Patrick Polino (Buffalo, Lincoln Stars) and freshman Cory Babichuk (Edmonton, AB/Spruce Grove Saints).

The Engineers had a number of chances to make it a one-goal game, but could not sneak a third tally past Western Michigan freshman netminder Brandon Bussi (Sound Beach, NY/Muskegon Lumberjacks), who finished with 21 saves on the night, including five during RPI's five power play chances.

Late in the third period, the Broncos added a pair of insurance goals, beginning with a power play goal from Lee at 16:28. He fired a shot from the middle of the slot that made its way through a screen and past RPI sophomore goaltender Owen Savory (Cambridge, ON/St. Catharines Falcons). Assists on his second goal of the night and of the season went to classmates Luke Bafia (Parrish, FL/Green Bay Gamblers) and Dawson DiPietro (Medina, OH/Janesville Jets).

Just 11 seconds later, freshman Jason Polin (Holt, MI/Cedar Rapids Roughriders) capped the scoring with his fourth goal of the season. Sophomore Drew Worrad (Birr, ON/Steinbach Pistons) collected the lone assist on the game's final tally.

Sophomore Ottoville Leppanen (Espoo, Finland/Espoo Blues U20) opened the scoring at 4:06 of the first period, when he tipped home a point shot by freshman Mason Klee (Morrison, CO/Sioux Falls Stampede) on the power play.

Bussi (14-10-4) made 13 of his 21 stops in the second period alone, while Savory (8-8-2) had 12 of his 29 in the middle frame. The Broncos went 2 or 4 on the power play, while RPI was 1 for 5.

The Engineers return to ECAC Hockey play next weekend, when they visit Colgate and No. 2 Cornell on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (7pm), respectively. Western Michigan visits Miami University for a pair.
