Softball Concludes Season, 12-0

Engineers sweep on final day of competition in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. - Senior Allie Hunt drove in a combined 10 runs to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team to a pair of victories over Penn State Altoona and Susquehanna on Thursday at Hancock Fields. With wins of 15-0 and 11-4, the Engineers conclude their 2020 season with a 12-0 record.

Against the Nittany Lions, RPI exploded for 11 runs in the top of the third inning. A bases loaded hit by pitch from Steph Cavallaro got the scoring started, before Hunt cleared the bases with a grand slam and a 5-0 lead. Classmate Maddie Provencher also left the yard. Freshman Madie Camagna and senior Quin Garant added RBI hits before the frame was over.

The Engineers tacked on one in the fourth, before plating three runs in the fifth for the five innings victory. Ryleigh Greenwald, Kyla Anderson and Veronica DeStefano all brought home runs with base hits in the game's final frame.

In the circle, senior Jaime Cleasby allowed one hit over 5.0 innings for the complete game shutout. She struck out 10 and walked one.

Rensselaer put together a big third inning against Susquehanna in the night cap, scoring six times for another early lead. Hunt once again provided the big blow, launching a three-run homer that gave the Engineers a 6-0 advantage. 

The River Hawks battled back in the fourth, scoring four times to draw within 6-4. Madison Lane got them on the board with a double to left, before Erin Bean plated two with a single to right. Kasey Bost then brought Susquehanna within two with a double, but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple.

Hunt got one run back in the bottom half, singling home classmate Cam Caswell for a 7-4 lead. 

The Engineers then added four insurance runs isn the sixth, highlighted by a bases-clearing double off the bat of Cavallaro.

Cleasby once again picked up the win the in the circle, giving up four runs on eight hits over 5.0 innings. She struck out seven and did not walk a batter. Sophomore Erika Holowka worked the final 2.0 innings, giving up one hit and recording three strikeouts.
