GAMEDAY (March 7, 2020): For the first time since 1996, Rensselaer (24-4) plays in an NCAA Tournament Second Round game when it takes on No. 20 Tufts (22-6) in Medford, Mass. ... The winner advances to the Sweet 16.
RPI IN FIRST ROUND: Sophomore
Mason Memmelaar scored on a layup with 23 seconds left and RPI denied New England College's game-winning attempts to overcome a 16-point, second half deficit and defeat the Pilgrims 58-57.
LEADING SCORERS:
Jonny Angbazo and
Mason Memmelaar had game-high honors for Rensselaer with 15 points apiece ... Memmelaar added a team-best nine rebounds, while Angbazo pulled down seven boards with two steals and two blocked shots ... New England College junior guard Calvin Cheek led all scorers with 16 points with a game-high seven rebounds.
TEAM NUMBERS: The Engineers made 62.5 percent of its second half shots after a first half of 30.4 percent ... RPI won the battle of the boards 43-24, including 14-9 on the offensive end.
IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT: RPI is now 4-9 all-time in NCAA Tournament games, which included consolation games in the past ... Rensselaer's first victory was against Albany in a 1975 consolation (72-55) ... It had two wins in 1996, defeating Hartwick (68-55) and St. Lawrence (78-70) before a loss in the Sweet 16 at Franklin & Marshall (74-58).
TUFTS IN FIRST ROUND: Sophomore Carson Cohen sunk two game-winning free throws with five seconds left and No. 20 Tufts overcame a 20-point first half deficit to beat Western Connecticut State, 74-72 ... The Jumbos outscored the Colonials 16-0 in the final 4:40 to complete a 14-point comeback in the final minutes.
LEADING SCORERS: Junior Luke Rogers led Tufts in scoring with 15 points and added 16 rebounds and three blocks ... Carson Cohen had 14 points, three rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals ... Ahmod Privott turned in 21 points, five rebounds and four steals for Western Connecticut State.
ALL-TIME VS. TUFTS: The Engineers are 1-1 against Tufts with a 75-70 season-opening win in 1999 at NYU and a 67-66 loss in January 1980.
YEAR-END HONOREES: Junior
Patrick Mahoney earned Liberty League Player of the Year, sophomore
Dom Black garnered Defensive Player of the Year and
Mark Gilbride and
Erich Kaempffe captured Coaching Staff of the Year.

Dom Black, guard, earned Second Team and
Mason Memmelaar was Honorable Mention.

Mitchel Wayand and
Kevin Davis have been a part of 66 wins in their Rensselaer tenures, which is second for any class ... The Class of 1993 holds the mark with 70 ... Three other classes won 61 contests.
YEAR-END HONORS: Tufts junior Luke Rogers was named the NESCAC Player of the Year and All-NESCAC First Team ... Eric Savage received an All-NESCAC Second Team honor ... Head coach Bob Sheldon was named the NESCAC Coach of the Year.
