Six-Goal Third Quarter Lifts Men's Lacrosse

BABSON PARK, Mass. - Senior Owen Putman (Round Lake, N.Y.) scored three of his four goals in the decisive third quarter as visiting Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) rallied from a two-goal halftime deficit to defeat Babson College 13-9 in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.

RPI improves to 4-1 with its second consecutive victory, while Babson drops to 3-2.

Sophomore Connor Glosner (Auburn, N.H.) finished with three goals and two assists, and junior Jason Bram (Reading, Pa.) and sophomore Cooper Urban (Glen Mills, Pa.) both scored twice for the Engineers. Glosner also caused two turnovers and picked up four ground balls, junior Nick DeOliveira (Lanoka Harbor, N.J.) won 8-of-12 face-offs, and classmate Brian Doughty (Glenelg, Md.) made 10 saves and added a pair of caused turnovers in the victory.

Sophomore Ryan Donovan (Cohasset, Mass.) finished with two goals and one assist and senior Owen Allen (Franklin, Mass.) and junior Ethan Carpenter (Orlando, Fla.) each scored twice to lead the Beavers. Senior Kevin Klempner (Stuart, Fla.) scooped up a season-high seven ground balls, while juniors John Antaya (Duxbury, Mass.) and Will Messner (South Kingstown, R.I.) both forced three turnovers. Senior Christopher Aranalde (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) made 11 saves in the loss.

The Green and White jumped on top less than three minutes into the contest on goals by Donovan and junior Lee Sipes (Windham, N.H.) and had three different two-goal leads in the first quarter. Tallies by Putman, junior Nicholas Colucci (Churchville, N.Y.) and Glosner gave Rensselaer a 5-4 advantage, its first of the game, with 8:48 to go in the second, but the Beavers responded with a three-goal run of their own to go back in front 7-5 on junior Mason O'Hanlon's (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) man-up marker 61 seconds before halftime.

The Engineers pulled within one on a man-up score by Urban eight seconds into the third quarter and got consecutive tallies from Glosner and junior Ryan Cole (Medina, Ohio) to go back ahead 8-7 with 9:00 to go in the stanza. Babson stopped the run momentarily as Allen finished off a feed from junior Jack Tague (Fairfield, Conn.) in transition to tie the game 40 seconds later before Putman keyed a four-goal spurt with three markers over the final 5:57 of the third that put RPI in front for good.

Despite forcing eight turnovers in the final stanza, the Beavers were stymied by Doughty, who stopped four of five shots on target in the frame. First-year Chi Chi Price (Hingham, Mass.) pulled the hosts to within 12-9 with 4:20 to play, but the Engineers won the ensuing face-off and stretched the margin back to four on Bram's second tally of the afternoon with 3:03 to go.

Both teams are back in action on Wednesday at 6 p.m. as Babson travels to Bowdoin, while RPI visits nationally-ranked Williams.
