Veronica DeStefano went 4 for 8 with a grand slam and sophomore righthander
Erika Holowka threw her second complete game of the spring to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team to a pair of victories over Penn State DuBois, 11-2, and Trinity University (Texas), 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex. With the two wins, the Engineers improve to 6-0 on the year.
In Game 1 on the day, RPI got on the board in the top of the first, thanks to an RBI-single off the bat of sophomore
Erin Askins. Two innings later, Askins doubled home two more for a 3-0 lead.
The Engineers then took advantage of four errors in the top of the fourth to open up a 6-0 lead. Junior
Kyla Anderson and DeStefano picked up the two hits in the frame.
Penn State DuBois got on the board in the bottom half of the inning, when Aspen Bishop ripped a two-run home run.
RPI then blew the game open in with a five-run top of the seventh, highlighted by a grand slam from DeStefano, which brought home senior
Quin Garant and freshmen
Catherine Worthington and
Chloe Lewandowski.
Senior righthander Jaime Cleaby (1-0) picked up the win in the circle, allowing two runs on three hits in 4.0 innings. She struck out seven and walked one. Sophomore
Nicole Small worked the final three innings of the game to earn the save. She allowed just three hits.
Against Trinity, Holowka (3-0) surrendered just one unearned run over 7.0 innings to lead RPI to its sixth victory of the season. She struck out six without a walk, while allowing six hits. Her counterpart, Allie Holbrook (3-4) gave up three runs (2 earned) on seven hits in 6.0 innings. She also had six strikeouts and zero walks.
The Tigers got on the board first in the top of the second, when Kristina Kish came around to score on a fielder's choice.Â
RPI the fought back with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth. An RBI-single from Askins tied the game, before senior
Steph Cavallaro drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth with a sacrifice fly that brought home classmate
Cam Caswell.
Sophomore
Ryleigh Greenwald plated the Engineers' insurance run in the sixth with double to the gap in left center, scoring Lewandowski, who was pinch-running.
The Engineers are back in action on Tuesday, when they take on Penn State Altoona (11:30am) and Penn State Brandywine (1:45pm).
