WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Senior
Erick Zecha took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, leading the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to an 11-3 victory over Dickinson College, on Monday morning at Chain of Lake Ballpark. With the win, the Engineers improve to 2-1, while the Red Devils drop to 6-5.
RPI jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. Sophomore
George Rainer drilled a single through the right side of the infield to plate the game's first run and advanced to second on the throw home. Two wild pitches allowed two more RPI runs to score.
The Engineers then made it 5-0 in the top of the sixth. Sophomore
Jack Moncur delivered an RBI-single to right, before Rainer looped a base hit to right center, plating Moncur from second.
Zecha (1-0) saw his no-hit bid broken up with two outs in the sixth inning, when Andrew Cohen doubled to the gap in left center. Max Matilsky followed that up with a double of his own to get Dickinson on the board.
Each team plated two runs in the seventh. A wild pitch and a run-scoring double by senior
Jack Vaccari gave RPI a brief 7-1 lead, before a two-run double by Tom Gannaway brought Dickinson within 7-3.
A pinch-hit single by senior
Michael Arboleda gave the visitors an 8-3 lead in the eight, before the Engineers plated three runs on just one hit in the ninth to complete the scoring in the contest.
Zecha finished with 6.2 innings pitch, allowing three runs on four hits. He struck out two and walked four. Sophomore Aiden Safar allowed just two hits over 2.1 innings of relief. Red Devils starter Connor Langan (0-1) gave up seven runs (4 earned) on 10 hits over 6.2 innings. He struck out six and walked one.
Offensively, the Engineers were led by Rainer, who went 3 for 5 with a run and three runs batted in. Junior
Richard Drum went 3 for 5 with a double, a run and an RBI. Vaccari, Moncur and junior
Hudson Livesey each had two hits.
The Engineers are back in action tomorrow morning, when they take on Penn State Altoona at Chain of Lakes Stadium (9am). Dickinson takes on Washington University on Wednesday (12pm).
