Senior Celebration Series: Steph Cavallaro

At Rensselaer, we are proud to recognize the student-athletes who are members of the Class of 2020. We thank them for their hard work, dedication and tremendous efforts in representing the Institute in a first-class manner academically and athletically. We wish them well as they continue to complete the semester and become Rensselaer alumni / alumnae.

While at Rensselaer:
First base … Three-year starter … Played 107 career games, 95 as starter ... Had 16 doubles, one triple and five home runs among 52 career hits ... Scored 49 runs with 40 runs batted in ... Mechanical Engineering major ... Dean's Honor List ... SAAC ... Manufacturing intern at Olympus Surgical Technologies America.

Favorite sports memory during career?
"My favorite memory during my athletic career was specifically the very last game in Florida preseason when we knew our season was cut short. This was the final win of our perfect little season, 12-0. That game was played with our hearts on the field, treating it as some championship game because we knew that all of our hard work from the past four years was coming to an abrupt end and we knew we could not take that for granted. At the very last out of the game, when we officially won, the whole team ran into an emotional hug, and I think that was the most rewarding, while heartbreaking, moment of my experience as a student-athlete." - March 2020

What makes Rensselaer so special?
"Rensselaer is a very special place because to be a student-athlete, you have to maintain the balance between academics and athletics. Not only are you working towards challenging degrees at a very prestigious college, you are also dedicating a large amount of time to a sport, solely for the love of the game and for the teammates around you. Due to this balance, RPI has shaped the most motivated individuals, including me, and this motivation will carry us through life." - March 2020

What are your post-graduation plans?
"I am currently working towards my Master's in mechanical engineering, with a focus on advanced manufacturing. While completing it, I will be working for GE Research as part of the Edison Program Internship." - March 2020

From the coaching staff:
"Steph is unrelenting in her pursuits on and off the field. Everything she accomplishes is due to her determination. She is an outstanding student, great player, selfless teammate, and incredible leader. She is the player every coach wants to have on their team." - April 2020

What others say:
"Steph is such an amazing person, so selfless and caring. She is a rock whenever you need her. She is a leader on and off the field and someone I admire and look up to. Not being around her every day breaks my heart but I know she will succeed in anything she sets her mind to." - March 2020

"Incredible human, incredible ball player, even better friend. An honor to play alongside and an honor to know. Her flexibility at first has given the team so many outs that would have been close plays otherwise. She has been someone that any teammate can go to for advice or support without judgement." - March 2020

"Even though Steph and I are the same age I look up to her immensely. Her dedication to the team and school demonstrates what kind of person she is. She is a great leader and her worth ethic is something I've always admired." - April 2020

"Steph is a great teammate and friend on and off the field. She is a great leader because of her willingness and ability to communicate with everyone. She truly adds so much value to the RPI softball program." - April 2020

"Steph was an amazing first baseman, and overall player. She made incredible plays on the field and is such a genuine and nice person. She has helped me so much whether it was on or off the field; I know she was always there for me. She supported me through some tough decisions and I will always consider her a friend. If she is able to come back, the team will only be better for it, but if not I know that she will be doing amazing things and helping even more people." - April 2020
