Senior Celebration Series: July 22

At Rensselaer, we are proud to recognize the student-athletes who are members of the Class of 2020. We thank them for their hard work, dedication and tremendous efforts in representing the Institute in a first-class manner academically and athletically. We wish them well in their futures.

SENIOR CELEBRATION SERIES: Joey Gutowski

While at Rensselaer:
Defensive back … Played 34 career games … Had 83 tackles (47 solo), including five for lost yards (9), three interceptions and 17 pass breakups … All-Liberty League once … Business and Management major ... Intern at Meridian Financial Associates.

From the coaching staff:
"Joey was a tremendous competitor and leader of the ‘DBU’. His high IQ for his position and our defensive scheme made him a coach on the field." - March 2020

What others say:
“Joey is easily one of the of the best athletes I have ever played with (and it doesn't matter which sport you are talking about). However, when it came to football, he was all over the field. As a senior safety, quarterbacks would literally avoid throwing anywhere in his general direction because they knew he could adjust quickly and make a play on the ball. My favorite part of practice was running one-on-one routes against him because it was always a battle. I firmly believe he was the best defensive back in our league by his senior year.” - March 2020

“Awesome competitor on the practice field and amazing player on game day.” - April 2020

SENIOR CELEBRATION SERIES: Marco Oliveri

While at Rensselaer:
Throws … Career-best 13.24 in shot put as senior … Third in shot at Colgate in 2020 … Mechanical Engineering major ... Dean's Honor List.

From the coaching staff:
"Marco is so caring of teammates, coaches and everyone around him. He brings a strong knowledge and passion for the throwing events and combines this with a genuine interest in the success of all of his teammates. When it comes to the track & field team, Marco not only knows all of his teammates across all events, but has the unmatched knowledge of every teammate’s individual performance at each meet and overall personal record." - March 2020

What others say:
"A fellow thrower who has been my roommate for three years now; he has been the best roommate I could ever ask for. He is probably the number one reason I joined the track & field team and I am glad he talked me into it. I am going to miss all of the banter we had together as well as his unending knowledge of the sport.” - March 2020

“The hardest worker I’ve ever been on a team with. He was the most knowledgeable thrower on the team, knowing the ins and outs of every throw, and will make an amazing coach one day. His drive radiated to everyone and made everyone also push for excellence. He is a great guy and is really going to be missed.” - March 2020

“Marco always helped us out whenever he could with pointers and encouragement. He knows everything there is about track and has a great appreciation for the sport. Together, Marco, Cam and Mark brought many laughs and smiles to each throws practice.” - March 2020

“Marco is always willing to help you out if you need it, and knows everybody’s PRs. He’s truly a team player, because he is always pushing for everyone to do well.” - April 2020

“Marco was a great presence on this team. He was always ready with feedback to improve technique and helped this team grow. He could list almost every teammate's personal records off the top of his head and was really supportive when he saw improvement. He will certainly be missed next year.” - April 2020

“Even if he was not a captain, Marco was the true leader of this team. He was liked and respected by members of all the disciplines of the sport which is a rarity. His knowledge of the sport was unmatched by anyone on the team, and his selfless acts to teach other teammates made so many people better. Marco is truly a great person and I am glad I get to call him a friend.” - April 2020

"Marco is the only one who would push me and keep me honest. His dedication to discus and unique, strong personality are unmatched." - April 2020
